I highly recommend this book for anybody who wants to learn about
DeLizza & Elster (aka Juliana) jewelry. It is worth the expense,
not only for the excellent photographs--and there are a lot of
them--but also for the information about HOW to identify Juliana.

There are numerous pictures of the BACKS of pieces--showing the
types of pinbacks & earring clips that D & E used, along with
photos of necklace & bracelet backs & clasps--and there are
tons of close-ups.

Unfortunately, there are many sellers on ebay who are
knowingly (and unscrupulously) selling new reproductions
& calling them "confirmed Juliana", & there are also a lot
of experienced sellers who will call anything "Juliana",
(even though they know better)in order to make a sale.
Juliana jewelry continues to be collectible, but all
these questionable listings are driving the prices down.
It makes me sad, since I love ebay & I love Juliana.

It has become a case of "buyer beware" when it comes to
Juliana jewelry, so it's a good idea to contact the seller
FIRST---BEFORE you bid---to ask them when, where & how
a piece was confirmed. If they can't provide that
information, don't bid!

There are several websites which on Juliana Jewelry which
have hundreds of photos of confirmed Juliana pieces, along
with information on the settings & clasps. Some of them are
members-only, but others are open to the public. Most of these
groups work with Frank DeLizza, ( one example is the "Discovering
D & E, aka Juliana" group)& he verifies (or not) every piece
attributed to D & E.

If this book has a flaw (and this is minor), I would say that
too many pictures are devoted to the D & E figurals. Many of
the photos show the same piece--(turtle, butterfly)---just in
different colors. But overall this is an incredible book &
a must-have for any serious collector of DeLizza & Elster jewelry.

This is a fantastic reference book for anyone interested in Juliana jewelry, which is my passion. It has some of the most beautiful pictures of pieces that are out of this world. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and looking at the fantastic pictures. I will use it as a reference for years to come. I bought it because I heard it was great and needed the reference, since I have lots of pieces of this style and hope to get many more in the future.

Wonderful pictures and information on how to identify one of the most misidentified vintage costume jewerly lines ever! A must have for dealers and collectors or someone who just loves fashion i.e. eye candy! Larger than life, over the top, the blingiest of bling, DeLizza & Elster's Juliana Line.

The Art of Julian Jewelry by Katerina Musetti
Review created: 07/28/08

The Art of Juliana Jewelry, written by Katerina Musetti, was published by Schiffer Books. It's a must have!

If you don't already know, DeLizza and Elster jewelry is among the most sought after costume jewelry around. Their use of unfoiled stones, art glass and other specialty rhinestones in fantastic, multi-layered designs has always made their jewelry a standout. This beautiful jewelry is also extraordinarily well made, so it has held up well over the years.

Since DeLizza and Elster jewelry was never signed, it's always been difficult for the average collector to identify. Fortunately, Musetti's book contains a very detailed section on how to correctly identify Juliana jewelry. She also uses lots of photos to support her descriptions so that you can clearly understand exactly what she means.

The book contains over 450 photographs of DeLizza and Elster Juliana jewelry. Some of these pieces are the most sought after by collectors. My only, and very mild criticism of the book is that some of the photos are a bit repetitious. On the other hand, I was also very pleased to see that Musetti included pieces that were attributed to and signed by other makers, such as Weiss, that were also made by DeLizza and Elster. This, along with the photos, make this very helpful and useful information.

There is also a price guide included in the book. While having a rough idea of prices may be useful, book prices should only be used as a general guideline. There are many factors that influence price, such as condition or the current market. It's the incredible photographs of the pieces that enable identification that make this book most useful.

This is an absolute must have book for both the fledgling as well as experienced collector of costume jewelry. It is an excellent reference book that is well worth the investment.
