Synopsis The San Francisco and New York Fillmore theaters provided the 1960s counterculture with a fertile ground for musical experimentation, attracting the biggest names in rock, jazz, folk, and R&B. Legendary promoter Bill Graham brought together the greatest innovators on the scene, from creators of the San Francisco Sound like the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, to the British invaders Cream and The Who. THE ART OF THE FILLMORE brings together for the first time a comprehensive collection of over 400 full-color reproductions of the original hand-drawn posters, handbills, and tickets from those historic concerts. Graham commissioned the posters from some of the best young talents in the modern art world, including Wes Wilson, Rick Griffen, and David Byrd, producing surreal psychedelic images that exude the vibrant spirit of both the music and culture. Augmented with brief biographies, photographs, and quotes from the artists (whose work for Graham remains in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art collection today), this visually stunning book is a lasting testament and tribute to both the Fillmore concerts and the artistic individuality of the posters that promoted them.
