The best way to appreciate this series is start from the beginning and watch it all in order from season 1 until the end. A good portion of the jokes in the show can't fully be appreciated unless you watch it as I mentioned. A lot of jokes are reoccurring or jokes about the show itself. Also watch it soon! while the pop culture references are at least somewhat fresh in your mind. It's extremely witty and cynical but at times it's very light and silly. Which makes for a good balance. The family is so contemptible which would normally be aggravating but the silliness diffuses it instantly. Read up on the history a little as well because a lot of the jokes are stabs at the network or likewise pertaining to the show itself.
Overall it's my favorite show to watch right now.
