Recorded live The Ark, Boston, Massachusetts in July, 1968.
This disc features one of Zappa's best '60s bands (they went by the name The Mothers of Invention) performing live in Boston in 1968 at a place called the Ark. Originally recorded for commercial release but previously only available as a bootleg (read: somewhat illegal), THE ARK was mad widely available (with Zappa's blessing) by the good folks at Rhino. What makes this special is its excellent recording quality and the inclusion of some of Zappa's earliest classical/"serious" compositions that wouldn't be recorded in a studio until decades later (for example, "Some Ballet Music").
Also featured is a song only available as a B-side of a 45 ("Big Leg Emma") and a suite of "Uncle Meat/King Kong." Zappa is in good humor and the jazz/classical-oriented playing (there's less rowdy guitar soloing than in his '80s stuff) is precise and spirited. A classic live Zappa set!
