APPROACHING NORMAL, the follow-up to their platinum-selling 2006 album, FOILED, finds the Texas-based post-grunge outfit Blue October settling confidently into their sound. With help from veteran producer Steve Lillywhite, the band attains even newer sonic heights, sharpening their songcraft along the way, and all while maintaining their well-honed edge. Singer Justin Furstenfeld provides plenty of the angst the group is known for, especially in ferocious rockers like "Weight of the World" and "Dirt Room." But Furstenfeld also branches out lyrically, writing songs that celebrate life ("Jumprope") or tell character-driven stories ("Kangaroo Cry/Picking Up the Pieces"). Blue October's melodic elements and usual hard-rock wallop are only given emphasis by Lillywhite's production, making the disc one of Blue October's most realized efforts.
