Product Description
The first generation iPod shuffle was designed to be easily loaded with a selection of songs and to play them in random order. Owners of existing iPods had often left the music selection to “shuffle”, and the iPod shuffle was a way of implementing that in a much more cost-effective fashion. It relies on the use of an “autofill” feature in iTunes, which can select songs at random from a user’s music library (or from a specific playlist) and copy as many as will fit into iPod shuffle’s memory.

    Introduction

The Apple iPod Shuffle - 512MB Model

The iPod Shuffle, a flash memory-based digital music player based on iPod's shuffle feature which lets users "experience their music in a million different ways." Smaller and lighter than a pack of gum, the iPod Shuffle comes with its own lanyard so it's ready to wear right out of the box. The Shuffle works seamlessly with iTunes' AutoFill feature which automatically selects songs from a user's music library to fill up iPod shuffle with just one click. You can also select which songs you would like to have loaded onto your Shuffle by choosing either songs or playlists and selecting them for use on your Shuffle. The iPod Shuffle is the most affordable iPod ever, and enabled Apple to expand the overall market for their innovative iPod product line.

Some Photos Demonstrating the Shuffle's Relative Size

The intent of iPod Shuffle is pure simplicity - songs can be simply loaded and they are played in random order (hence the name "shuffle"). Apple indicates that on average, the 512MB Shuffle holds 120 songs.  The amount of songs it holds is subject to how large each of the songs is.

    Summary

Again, the hallmark of the Shuffle is its simplicity. There's no display or complicated menus to work through. There are just a few small buttons on the front for standard functions (play, fast forward, volume, etc.). There is a battery indicator and an ON/OFF/SHUFFLE slide switch on the back of the unit. The ON/OFF/SHUFFLE switch allows the user to listen to the music either in the order that the music was loaded onto the iPod or randomly by putting it into the SHUFFLE position.

Shuffle = Slick and Snazzy... but not my favorite.

When the iPod Shuffle arrived, it was Apple’s response to the wave of flash MP3 players taking a share of the market – the iPod of course was a bigger success than anyone could have imagined, but it was still too large and bulky for the active user (someone wanting to take it on a jog, use it while spinning, etc). The Shuffle was supposed to be Apple’s claim on this segment of the market – light, portable and durable MP3 players that value portability over functionality.

The trouble however is that the Shuffle compromises too much on functionality – personally, I don’t get very excited about an MP3 player:

    1) without an LCD screen
    2) without playlist capability
    3) that requires the use of a rope around your neck
    4) an armband (essential) for athletic use costs an extra ~$30

This doesn’t bother many people – and if it doesn’t bother you, than the Shuffle is a great choice. Personally, I think the design of the Shuffle is super cool and typical Apple. However, in terms of portable flash players, my prefence is the Rio Forge series and there are lines of plenty of other alternatives. All cost less and, in my opinion, are better values.

While my clear preference for these kind of MP3 players is not the Shuffle – I can’t help but leave positive reviews for its sleek, different and sexy design – which certainly is enough of a selling point for many consumers.

My advice – think about what features and functions you want in an MP3 player before buying.

      What's not to like?

I got an iPod Shuffle as a present and have totally loved it. There are few companies that can provide unique product design combined with ease of use and functionality.

Sound quality on the Shuffle is great, and comes with a comfortable set of headphones which provide decent sound quality.

The Shuffle is very durable, extremely light, and there are a huge array of accessories from holders to arm band thingies.

So what's not to like? Well... despite as cool as it looks, functionality wise it's pretty limited. I recently bought my wife a Sandisc player because it had some features the Shuffle doesn't. Namely:

    - Display
    - Microphone/Record
    - More capacity
    - Replaceable Battery

When your Shuffle's battery eventually dies you have to mail it to Apple to have it fixed, which is inconvenient. The other thing about iPod's in general is that the iPod format isn't the most optimal for space; other devices that are Windows Media based can hold more songs.

But all in all, not bad. The Shuffle is more than just a player, but is also a fashion piece.
