The 4th Gen Nano does it right!
Review created: 09/24/08
by:
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The 4th generation Nano, Available in capacities of 8GB, and 16GB (priced at $149 & $199 respectively) these have a scratch-resistant aluminum body and are now slimmer than ever. The unit has new rounded, contour edges that make it feel thinner than it is and feel right in your hand. The new line-up comes in a whole array of colors to match the rainbow, and to match your personality as well.

The 4th Generation Nano has completely redesigned the Nano over the 3rd generation “Fat”, and it feels like it is different on the sides when you hold it comparatively to the older generations. Stepping back to the 1st and 2nd generation designs, it takes the good of the style of the 2nd gen, along with the advancements in the “Fat” 3rd generation versions, and creates a winning design. This design is a lot thinner than it was, yet retains the 2-inch screen, though it is millimeters thinner. The new screen saves the room for viewing your tracks and playing games, but the genius comes in the flipping of the screen.

The screen with this change, still has a 2-inch viewing area, which makes it very easy to use, browse and watch. When view movies, shows, podcasts with the new Nano, the Nano should be flipped to a “widescreen” view, in which the new accelerometer changes the landscape and viewing of this device. This new Nano still has a long battery life. Apple claims that it will last 36 hours, but I was able to get just over 32 hours of playtime – which is nice… real nice. The video experience was just over 6 hours – as advertised.

Another thing about the accelerometer. The accelerometer also enables 'shake to shuffle', where a flick of the wrist will choose a random song. This feels like it has been done right. It also allows easy use of the coverflow system, which runs much smoother this time around.

The new music search functions (Genius), the brighter screen,, sound quality, smoother ease and use of coverflow, and continued games support give the new iPod added flare. The addition of voice notes won't make a difference to most people, as you'll need to buy some extra headphones with a microphone built in – but it is nice to know that it is there if you do.

The addition of Genius, an automatic playlist generator, is going to be a massive hit with iPod fans. Genius will be massive, because it will - if it works as advertised - unlock the potential of your iPod library and help keep parties jumping or evenings chilled. It will also allow Apple to recommend tracks to you by your listening tastes as well.

As a fan small MP3 players, and of the past Nano line-ups, I love this design. I really do. I think the all aluminum casing is the way to go, and I am happy again that it is all around the unit. Should you replace your old 8GB Nano (3rd Generation) with the new one? If you really want accelerometer video abilities and Genius, I would say yes. Regardless if you upgrade, or decided to wait it out, I highly recommended this device to Apple lovers and new MP3 enthusiasts alike.

Pros:
-Brighter, crisper viewing screen
-Aluminum scratch-resistant casing all around the body
-Amazing battery-life: 30+ hours plus (6+ with video)!
-Search features, cover flow, album art, Genius
-Accelerometer for video viewing and song shuffling
-Genius song selection
-Microphone capabilities
-LOTS of new colors to choose from
-Games via iTunes

Cons
-Still no built in FM tuner
-Limited space when it comes to video & games

The iPod is an overall good product. You can play music, view videos, play games on it, and more. Positive points are that it is small and the interaction design is good. Bad points are that it does not have the wireless synch and radio, and also, it doesn't last very long (average of 2-3 year). I already had iTunes so I bought another iPod when my old one died, but if I was starting from scratch, I would strongly recommend making research on other players before buying.

Apple iPod Nano 4th Gen, what a PERFECT BUY!

I love using the new Apple iPod Nano chromatic.
It's very small, weighs close to nothing and has a beautiful bright screen.
You can also change the text to a larger font so that it will be easier to use in the car when you have it hooked up.

The battery lasts a very long time and is perfect all around for travelling, in the car, working out, etc.

Also, for the price, this nano is definitely UNBEATABLE in its market.

Excellent product, sound is awesome, easy to use, I bought this product knowing it had been opened and was in perfect condition as seller stated. The new shake and shuffle feature makes it so easy if working out and don't want to mess with buttons I would recommend to anyone. I did purchase a better set of headphones, noise canceling headphones with foam earpieces make the sound even better but would not be necessary.

They keep making the iPod smaller with more storage capacity. I likethe fact that it fits in a hand more ergonomically now and takes up less space in a shirt pocket. yet the screen takes up more of the front.

  Excellent iPod!

When I first opened the box, I was honestly surprised at the size of the iPod. It is definately thinner than any other iPod Nano that was ever made, yet it has the largest storage for a Nano, which is a massive plus. Some of the features include the "shake to shuffle" feature which is a fun feature, but can be an annoyance sometimes. For instance, while driving the iPod was on my center console, and it fell down on a sharp turn, and shuffled by mistake. No worries though, you can turn off this feature to prevent it. Another cool feature is that using an accelerometer, you can tilt the screen and view and scroll through album covers. The games that are included use the accelerometer to control them. My personal favorite is the maze game which you tilt the iPod to control the ball. The interface itself is greatly improved and is a pleasure to use. The menus are smoother than any other iPod I have ever used.

All in all, here's what I give it:
Design: 9/10 - small, curved, but may be fragile. Variety of colors is a plus.
Interface: 10/10 - runs super smooth
Features: 8/10 - great features, but shake to shuffle can get annoying

Overall: 9/10

  A great step up

It's what you're going to expect from any new IPod (minus the Touch, of course). Apple's new marketing idea, the Chromatic series, shines a new light to the Nano. Seeing that the third generation wasn't exactly a great new jolt to the Nano other than it being a miniature version of the IPod Video, the 4th Generation returns to the slim, tall model that the Nano was known as before.

The 4th Gen basically has only one new addition that stands out. Similar to the ITouch, the IPod Nano Chromatic is motion-sensitive. This allows you to tilt your Nano horizontally to watch movies or look through Album covers similar to the ITunes store. Additionally, there is the new shuffle method. Although the idea of "rattling" the Nano will shuffle your songs looks great in the commercials, it can be something to fuss about if you forget to lock your Nano whilst running, exercising, etc. And sometimes when you're running, you'll feel like reaching over your arm and changing the song. This will force you to hit the lock switch off, change the song, and lock it again to avoid the motion shuffle. The good thing, though, is that you can disable this feature. But it's more fun to shake the Nano to shuffle your songs rather than going to the Main Menu and scroll down click "Shuffle Songs."

The sleek, aluminum look is also an upgrade from the third generation. This is, in my opinion, the best IPod design ever released. The screen is a lot bigger in person, and about 1.6x larger than the third generation model. The chrome lock switch looks a lot better than the old white one. Also, it is incredibly slim. When you plug in the stock USB dock connector to the Nano, you can see that even the adapter is fatter than the Nano itself. And the fear of cracking it in half is not as scary as the older Nanos since this one definitely feels a lot more durable. The downside to this is that the earphone jack is on the bottom of the Nano, right next to the dock connector. The problem is that some people, including myself, have accessories that have us using both the earphone jack and the dock connector at the same time. They can easily get in each other's ways since some dock adapters are quite bulky, as well as some earphone jacks.

Overall, this is a highly recommendable MP3 product. It's already clear that IPods are more favorable than any other MP3 players out there, and this new Nano helps justify this statement even more. With all the available colors released right from the get-go, the only problem you might have is picking which color you like the most! Definitely pick this up if you can. 9/10

PROS:
-Slim, durable design
-New motion feature allows versatile ways to play and listen.
-Relatively large screen

CONS:
-dock connector and 3.5mm jack placement
-not much else really!

This is a great product! But it can be expensive! I'm glad I found www.freeiphoneforme.co.uk where I got mine for free :)

All I did was sign up and then completed ONE offer. I recommend the Seattle Coffee offer free trial as it only takes a few minutes to complete!

My personal recommendation is the King.com offer as it is quick, easy and only costs $5.

There are many other gadgets I got for free this way, such as consoles, iPhones, iPods, Plasma TV's and the list goes on and on.

Visit: www.freeiphoneforme.co.uk

I hope you enjoy the extra $$$'s saved in your bank account from using www.freeiphoneforme.co.uk :)

  4th Generation iPod Pro's Con's
Review created: 03/01/09
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

These 4th generation iPod are great. We have 3 at the house. They are reliable and durable. The screens are large and bright. The only bad part is that they do not charge with all the older iPod players and chargers. I can’t believe that Apple did that to us. All the players we have work fine playing the iPod, but none of them charge the 4th generation iPods. That real sucks….

This ipod is pretty cool. sometimes you dont have time enough to use everything it has: VIDEO, MUSIC, GAMES, ALERTS, CONTACTS etc. etc.

The only thing i dont like is that you have to use Itunes for almost everything. you can't delete anysongs directly from the ipod itself.
