I purchased my 4Gb 1st gen silver iPod mini in the summer of 2004. I needed an mp3 player and i needed some sort of storage device for university work and for general data transfer.
After good references from friends and varied reviews online, i decided to take the plunge and buy an iPod.
Now i know people have had bad experiences with iPods but I have to say, I haven't had any real problems with mine. Yes, occassionaly I need to reset it and my own misuse on one or two occassions has meant a full re-format of the thing, but it's been a sturdy and reliable mp3 player and storage device.
The amount of accessories is amazing as is the amount of support online.
When purchasing mine, I was able to take out 5 years cover for the mini from the retailer which covered common issues such as the battery, but I've not had to use for it yet. but with over 2 years usage, the only thing that has degraged in any way is the batter life, and even then just by an hour or so.
I would recommend an iPod mini to anyone that asked. Just make sure you know about, what i consider trivial, problems that can occur and try to get an extended warranty.
