IPOD 80gb CLASSIC MEETS MOST OF MY EXPECTATIONS
Review created: 02/08/08(updated 03/31/08)

Bought this unit because of it's hard drive size. My objective was to put my entire CD collection on the iPod...which is 400 CDs currently, plus to have the capability of adding many more CDs in the future. I concluded that this was the right unit for me, and it has met my expectations.
iTunes is easy to use and this iPod is easy to use. No major complaints but the only small things I do not like:
- does not come with wall charger
- with 400 CDs on the iPod, it's very difficult to navigate through all the albums. The clickwheel is nice, but when there are 400 CDs, it's cumbersome to navigate through the albums. Takes a while to get from AC/DC to YES. Holding one button to scroll forward or backward would have been easier than the click wheel if you have several hundred CDs and artists.
- Syncing with iTunes take a long time once you have this many CDs on it. If I add one new CD/album to the iTunes library, and perform a sync to get that one new album onto the iPod, it takes a very long time.
- It has video capability, so I guessed (and I thought this was a reasonable expectation) that I would be able to add some DVDs to the video collection similarly to how I can upload my existing CDs. This is not the case. It's not possible to upload your DVDs to the unit, at least not with the Apple software. I believe there is some third party software that can assist in converting DVD files to files that are useable on the iPod, but my expectation was that this would capability would be in the box.
- The cover flow feature is nice, but cover art is not available for nearly half of my existing CDs. For example, I cannot get the cover art for any AC/DC albums.
- Has an equalizer (EQ) feature but it is not customizable. You can only select from about a dozen preset EQ configurations.
- For me, it was realitively easy to use after a couple hours. But for some people that are not high tech, the whole system (iTunes and iPod) may be too cumbersome. I can see the potential to have the system returned by some because it's too complicated.
- Of course, you really need a high powered PC and internet service for it to work easily. A friend of mine had still been using cheap dial up internet (which was a good choice for him for what he used it for), and he chose to get an iPod. Essentially, it's impossible to use with dial up. For example, the iTunes software does not come in the box. You need to download it from the iTunes website. With my friend's dial up service, this download took like 5 hours. Yet, he still liked the idea of the iPod so much, that he decided to finally upgrade to DSL. At the end of the day he is happy, but now he is paying an extra $20/month for DSL just for his iPod use.
