3 stars... for unimpressive 2nd Gen upgrades
Review created: 02/06/09
108 of 118 people found this review helpful.

I've owned multiple 1st and 2nd generation iPhone's. Even after the addition of the new iPhone 3G version and the myriad imitators, it remains a highly functional and prestigious device.

The 3g variants (8/16gb and black/white back casings) are almost identical. Depending on your uses, it won't matter which you get. Encoding and loading videos is too much work. The iPod feature functions EXACTLY as an iPod would. Sadly, the GPS is too weak to be useful, with no 3rd party routing software available.

Thoughts: 1st Gen (4gb/8gb/16gb, Edge) vs 2nd Gen (8gb/16gb, 3G+GPS)

1. The battery life for both is rather similar. The 2nd Generation iPhone wins, but not by enough to justify the upgrade.
2. The LCD digitizer (touchscreen) is practically the same with both editions--don't expect major changes.
3. The cases and dimensions of the 1st and 2nd generation iPhones are similar, but the 1st gen is "fatter" in terms of overall girth. 1st gen iphones will not fit in 2nd gen cases, and vice versa.
4. The 1st gen iPhone has a recessed phone jack at the top, and will accommodate only apple-style headphone plugs (circular cable inset). The 2nd generation is standardized, and will work with regular plugs without secondary adapters.
5. The 1st gen iPhone has a metallic case on the backside. The 2nd gen iPhone has either a white or black plastic case. The chrome trim remains the same on both devices. The plastic cases tend to scratch easier than the metallic versions, but the plastic looks better and has a better (smoother) feel to the bare touch.
6. Overall function: both versions are very similar, featuring EXTREMELY similar hardware. Aside from the GPS addition in the 2nd generation iPhone models, you will be hard-pressed to notice any differences in overall functionality--but ONLY assuming you're updated to the same firmware version on each device.

What is disturbing about this model:

1. Do NOT let it overheat. Make sure you keep it charged in a cool location with sufficient airflow. This means DON'T put it on fabric. Don't overcharge, and be sure to inspect (check for overheating) regularly. The first time it overheats (it will be HOT to the touch), the battery output will GREATLY diminish (1/2 to 1/3 capacity), and should be changed through Apple.
2. There is NO apple-supplied application for checking and resetting the iPhone battery. This is provided for MacBooks, but not the iPod line
3. All of the iPhone models are EXTREMELY fragile--immediately purchase a case (breathable if possible), or a Zagg InvisibleShield to protect it from scratches and the odd bump/bruise.
4. Internal components are flush with the case, and simple dents will cause components/features to fail
5. DO NOT attempt to open ANY iPhone model for repair if you do not have experience--the cases/trim are prone to dents/bends, and you are likely to scratch/damage internal components if you attempt to replace the digitizer or battery yourself (the most common repairs). It is better to take them directly to Apple stores for repair.
6. Based on who you talk to, Apple will ONLY honor the 1 year manufacturer warranty if the iPhone is linked to an AT&T contract. If you have Jailbroken/Unlocked your iPhone, reset it to factory firmware and specifications before attempting to deal with Apple Repair.
7. No external HD capacity detected--camera only.
8. You have to deal with iTunes to activate and sync music.

AMAZING !! But Dont Pay More Than $5

This is a great product! But it can be expensive! I'm glad I found www.ultimate-free-gifts.co.uk where I got mine for free :)

All I did was sign up and then completed ONE offer. I recommend the Seattle Coffee offer as it is FREE to complete and takes a few minutes!

There are many alternative offers you can complete such as the King.com offer where you have play through $5. There is a chance you will win your money back anyway!

There are many other gadgets I can get for free this way, such as consoles, iPhones, iPods, Plasma TV's and the list goes on

Visit: www.ultimate-free-gifts.co.uk

before you think about putting your hands into your pocket for this gadget.

The site can afford to send out these "free" gifts because you have to complete an offer first. They get paid commission when me and you do so, which is used to buy the gift with money left over as profit for them!

I hope you enjoy the extra $$$'s saved in your bank account from using ultimate-free-gifts.co.uk :)

I did not buy this product, but the seller was very informative, honest, and understanding. Someone else had bidded on this item through my account and decided not to buy. I just emailed the seller and let them know right away and they went on to the next highest bidder. I appreciated it. Highly recommende!

  "New, Never Opened" Apple iPhone
Review created: 04/13/09
by:
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I love the iPhone though I hate the fact that it was sold for $440, indicated as "New, Never Used." When it came to me, the iPhone was USED and has scratches and scuffs. I was tricked and I had to pay for a USED iPhone worth a "NEW" one. I just wished that I just didn't buy from the particular buyer and looked for a REAL "NEW" iPhone. The USB cable that came with it was very dirty and was very old; and also broken.
The phone should develop a "PUSH" method so applications can run even when they are closed. IM is also one thing they don't have. Games are very fun!!!

  Worth it.

iPhone is a great combination tool. You have an internet browser, ipod/music player, phone, calendar, alarm clock, gameboy and more in your hand. Saves you pocket or bag space from carrying all those items around.

Bad news is that the GPS is only so-so. You cant ask it to plot an alternate route, or ask it to avoid highways/toll roads. There are no turn-by-turn vocal directions.

Multimedia messaging is not an option. You can use the embedded camera to take pictures, but you have to email them. And as for receiving messages, forget trying to retrieve them from the bogged down "viewmmessage" website att sends you an insane login for.

On the plus side call quality is excellent. Text messaging is simple, and no more worries about full message boxes. The hard drive has plenty of room for texts. The ipod interface is nice and intuitive.

There are also all the available applications. While you may not be able to find what you are looking for free, I've found an app for anything I wanted on the app store.

Well worth the price if you want it all.

  Apple iPhone 3G (AT&T)
Review created: 04/21/09

Some people are upset about having to send in their iPhone, pay over $80. and get a loaner phone when the battery drains out? And here's an even deeper question: did Apple really pull the wool over our eyes when it comes to the iPhone battery?

Even if I did know about the non-user replacement iPhone battery, I would not have expected anything else. Sure, if I opened up the iPhone box and saw a removable battery, I would have been shocked to say the least. But alas, that did not happen. (I was not surprised)

Apple's policy on batteries for the iPod certainly hasn't slowed down iPod sales or damaged market share. Why would they change their ways for the iPhone. Do I wish the iPhone and Ipod had a replaceable battery with out having to pull out the solder kit. (and a very steady hand) Absolutely, Some are a little ticked that it will cost them &79 plus $6.95 for shipping when the batteries dies? Yes. Will Apple change their design? No

Here are some tips to extend your battery life:
1. Pay attention to just a few common sense pointers will pay off with a longer battery lifespan and battery life for your iPhone. The most important thing is to keep your iPhone out of the sun or a hot car (even the glove box is bad). Heat will degrade your battery's life and performance the most.

2. Lock your iPhone

3. Turn off Wi-Fi (especially if you are not going to be using it)

4. Turn Off Bluetooth

5. Turn on auto-brightness

6. Turn off Equalizer

I hope this helps you out on you iPhone battery Lifespan. Enjoy it, The phone is a lot of fun!

Best regards,

LSCGAMERS

THE IPHONE IS AN INNOVATIVE AND USEFUL TOOL FOR TODAYS BUSY PERSON.ALTHOUGH THEY SEEM TO BE SOMEWHAT OF A WATER LOVING PHONE[THEY SEEM TO FALL IN WATER ALOT].As most prospective purchasers know the IPHONE, being MONOPOLIZED and fully CONTROLED by APPLE and AT&T is so pricey, we are forced to buy the phone from sellers outside the normal retail outlets.I chose to roll the dice and buy my phone used and broken to save hundreds of dollars and also unlock it to use with T-MOBILE.It is now up and running and I LOVE IT.

This phone is actually a small tablet computer. The battery life is great for a computer, below average for a phone. I have to charge it every two days. With Skype now available, this does most of what i need a computer to do on the go. That saves weight and space.

Great product.

This is a great all in one device (especially if you are a mac user or like mac osx). I work in IT and this closest thing to having a laptop that fits in your pocket, plus a phone, gps and etc. Yes it not perfect, but it does a lot pretty well. Another thing is the development community is awesome, with so many free and cheap apps and a ton of accessories that work with it. I just upgraded to the 3g after my 1g died (hard use, water damaged and still kept going until I took it apart and messed it up) and this one is even better.

  The Best Wireless Device Ever!
Review created: 03/30/09
by:
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The Apple iPhone 3G offers critical new features including support for high-speed 3G networks, third-party applications, and expanded e-mail. Its call quality is improved and it continues to deliver an excellent music and video experience.
The iPhone 3G delivers on its promises by adding critical features and sharper call quality. The iTunes App Store is pretty amazing, and the 3G support is more than welcome. Critical features still are missing, and the battery depletes quickly under heavy use, but the iPhone 3G is a big improvement over the original model.

I definitely like the iphone it almost has everything with the exception of mms, forward sms, and video capabilities. But those these you can always go around them. Other than that its a plus way to go. wifi, maping, gps, email, tracking, and more than enough application on the app store.

After a couple of years of waiting on the sidelines, I decided to take the plunge and get an iPhone. Didn't want to commit to AT&T for another 2 years, so I went the eBay route. This phone is great. Seems to have same connectivity as my previous KRZR in terms of ability to make and receive calls, good sound, wonderful apps in the Apple App store. Love that it has WiFi access, as that makes it a much faster experience than even the 3G. Battery life isn't good, but with all the bells and whistles, it is expected.

  BEST PHONE EVER
Review created: 02/03/09
by:
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Overall, this phone is brilliant. It is able to perform most basic tasks that a PC can perform and then some. I love the apps and I love being able to purchase and immediately use the music. The map/GPS function is something that I use almost on a daily basis. I live in a metro area and this is very helpful when finding restaurants, hospitals, apartments, anything!!! The only drawbacks are the picture messaging and lack of flash (player). If the phone had these two functions incorporated, it would be completely unrivaled. Good work, Apple.
