  Apollo by Alan Bean
Review created: 11/02/06

AS a fan of the space program and lunar exploration, I'll never forget Al Bean damaging the video camera for the eva. I got up very early in the morning to see the first color images from the moon. I have seen some of Al's work in magazines and such and when I saw this book, I've wanted to check it out.
The book not only gives insight to Al Bean the Astronaut, but Al Bean the Artist. The artwork is outstanding and the fact that he uses actual artifacts in the texture of the canvas was quite interesting.

As a space nut, I'd recommend this book to any space fan!

Record of mankind's first exploration of another world
Review created: 05/27/06
by:

Lunar missions chronicled in paintings by Apollo 12 astronaut Captain Alan Bean. The book contains almost a hundred full color paintings.

Apollo 12 and Skylab II astronaut Bean retired from NASA in 1982 to become, full-time, an exceedingly gifted artist, and this spectacular volume is made up of his artwork and a text he wrote with aerospace journalist Chaikin, author of A Man on the Moon (1994). The 90-odd paintings include depictions of Bean's own lunar landing and tributes to the achievements of other Apollo astronauts, especially those of Apollo 11 and 13. The main text and picture notes add up to a fairly complete biography of Bean as an astronaut, an artist, and an uncommonly useful member of society. There has been nothing quite like this book before, and as the astronauts of the early space program pass on, there will be fewer. Fortunately, NASA sent an artist to the moon early on, though, at the time, it didn't know it.
