Anzio (DVD, 2001)

This movie is NOT a good picture, but I collect war movies and so I bought this to replace my VHS version. As for the DVD itself, the product performed very well and there were no problems with the disc itself, but the movie is sort of lame.
A good cast of characters in a poor version of what happened. It's hard to tell if they are telling a story about the battle, one man who won't use a gun, or about a group of guys in combat. I think the film could be entitled anything else and it would still be the same, because the actual battle seems to be a side note. This is like many flicks from the era, not a real war movie, just some flag waving and a poor attempt at making an anti-war statement at the same time.
However, the film does bring to light why Anzio was a botched operation on the part of our American generals (or one general if you prefer, but everyone had the chance to sack him sooner); and it has some interesting photography and decent special effects (for the times) to keep you somewhat interested. The best part of the film is at the end, and I won't give that away.
Overall, if you haven't seen this film and you like war movies, don't get your hopes up too high and just accept it for what it is and WHEN it was made.
