It's about time the Animaniacs hit DVD! What a great series! The DVD boxset contains 5 DVDs, which is all of season 2.
Animaniacs is a Warner Brothers and Stephen Spielberg creation...an animated series of half hour programs. I do not believe that these actually are kids cartoons...but saying that, please let me say that there is no vulgarity, adverse sexuality or unacceptable levels of violence...that's not what I mean when I say this is not a kid's show.
What I mean is that most of the jokes are subtle and that only adults and maybe teenagers would get them. Heck, I catch a new background joke everytime I watch an episode! ON the surface, it's just a cartoon, and fine for children, but if you're older, you'll very likely enjoy this series cuz it pokes fun at everything from movies, to tv stars to politics, to world events to history, to geography, to literature...and so much more...but not in a rude and crude way (such as for instance South Park or Family Guy...ANIMANIACS is totally appropriate for kids...even if you end up laughing more often than they do!
PROS:
~~Of course the episode picture and sound quality is super-duper.
~~I LOVE how you can choose from the menu not only the episode that you want, but the segment you want (so you don't have to fast-forward through an episode to get to the part you want). I played "Potty Emergency" over and over!
~~I also LOVE how on disk 5 that there is a special segment called "The writers flipped they have no script"...which is a really interesting interview of some of the writer's from the series and a discussion about what their favorite episodes were. Wow! I wish all animated DVD sets had this feature.
CONS:
~~I actually found the DVDs a bit difficult to get out of their cardboard sleeve...it delayed me almost a minute from getting at them! Had to shake that box set like a stubborn Etch-a-sketch to get the DVDs to slide out.
~~Aside from the aforementioned "The writers flipped..." section, there are NO audio commentaries for any og the episodes (such as what Futurama offers). I found this to be very disappointing.
I would give it a 5/5, but for the lack of audio commentaries and other such extras.
