Barbara Kingsolver decides to take her family "local", and "organic" for one year. This book describes the challenges, and successes of her family's project. Daughter Camille offers nutrition information, and tasty recipes containing the fruits of their labors (a whole lot of tomatoes). Husband Steven offers the technical, historic, and often horrific aspects of food production and consumption.

This book is very high on my "favorites" list. It has changed my life, and given me direction to be a "green" dietitian. Kingsolver writes with hope, and evidence that we all can have improved nutrition for ourselves, and for our planet.

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver

I HIGHLY recommend this book. It completely changed the way I feed my family. I've traveled abroad recently and truly, no country in the world has the food system that we do. You really don't see how upside down things really are until you read this book. I don't settle anymore. I truly care about what I put in my body and I'm SO much happier because of it! I even bought copies for my family.

The book is entertaining but above all, informative! The perfect combination for a quick read!

This is a magical book for anyone that is interested in food, organics, living off the land, or just plain old wonderful recipes and stories about canning preserving and best of all - eating. I loved every morsel of information and as always, thoroughly enjoyed the poetically marvelous way Barbara Kingsolver has with words. Her hubby and daughter aren't too far from that wordsworthy vine either.

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver et all
Review created: 06/08/09

This is a great real life story book about learning what our food is all about and where it comes from and how to cook it and preserve it and how to "eating local and mostly what is in season" is better for us all, health-wise, economic-wise, and ecologically. It also clearly illustrates how much real work is involved in growing and harvesting one's food and why it is worth it to so many. It did not convince me to start farming, but gave me a much greater appreciation for those who do....especially those in my own locale. It is changing the way I chose my foods, mostly for my own healthy nutrition. I have shared this book with many, but hold on to it tightly as I need to keep my own copy for reference and reverence, so I purchase others for giving away!

Animal, Vegtable, Miracle is informative & fascinating!
Review created: 12/06/08

Non fiction book that mostly reads like fiction, in that it is easy to read and quite keeps your attention.

But it is non-fiction, filled with interesting facts about how our food supply modifications have impacted global climate change. This is a fascinating story of one families decision to live on their farm, and eat only what they could raise or grow for one full year.

This book is full of recipes, websites and information, and will change your mind about how you look at food and the way you buy or even grow it. It will also open your eyes to how large companies impact government and laws with little or no thought for consumer health, and what you can do about it.

  WOW! I LOVED THIS BOOK!
Review created: 06/09/08

Great book, very inspiring. Lot's of good information, yet not pessimistic and address's national, as well as personal issues about eating local, reducing carbon footprint and being green. I have definitely made some lifestyle changes after reading the book. Including: making bread in bread machine, frequenting farmers markets, buying local when at all possible and resurrecting my garden. The book reads well and Stephen and Camilla's entry's were a breath of fresh air. I highly recommend it. KV

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle - Barbara Kingsolver
Review created: 06/03/08

The subject matter interests our family. We own all of Barbara Kingsolver's books ... she is a North American treasure in our "books" ... pun intended. We also align ourselves with her political views which is very affirming. We north Americans will soon be forced to walk more lightly upon this planet ... but if we voluntarily do so as Kingsolver and family do it would be a less drastic change for all of us.

We also had the opportunity to attend a two-session book study on Animal, Vegetable, Miracle along with another companion book, The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan.

  Aa year with a locovore

Fascinating book introducing a living style and eating style you probably never even thought of....eating fresh, local produce, getting more nutrition and saving on all the energy needed to transport fruits from Chile, for example. It make me think about what we eat and why. Particularly fascinating to me was the section of breeding turkeys. Our usual turkeys are so "manufactured" they don't even know how to breed by themselves and the author's experiences trying to mate turkeys are hilarious. I still have some questions about turkey sex but they answered questions I never thought to ask. Interested in cheese making? Read this book. Strange organic recipes? Read this book.

The Miracle of "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle"

I first got this book from my local library. I was so excited by it, that I made a resolve to buy as many copies of it as I could and give them away. I've decided on a max I will pay from eBay sellers, and when I win a copy I insert a note I have written asking people to read the book and pass it on. It's my own small way to promote the "local" scene, in which I believe very much. Cheers, Kate!

Everyone who eats food should read this book
Review created: 08/24/07(updated 08/29/07)

My local food coop decided to read this for its initial coop book club meeting. It was a brilliant beginning; everyone thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It tells the story of how and why Barbara Kingsolver and her family devoted a year of their lives to eating only food they could obtain locally.

The book has something for everyone. It is funny, touching, entertaining and informative. Topics range from very interesting discussions of the culture and politics of food in America to helpful gardening tips and recipes. It is compelling reading. I read it while sitting on a crowded beach, and found myself attracting strange looks from other sunbathers as I chuckled at the very funny description of turkey mating behavior.

I am introducing this book to a group I lead on eating disorders and weight management. I think it will be very important in helping group members change the way they think about food.
