Mccourt gives us his life the good, the bad, and the ugly. He uses sarcasm and humor in the midst of the tragic events of his early life to draw the reader in.

  Great transaction and item!

This book was recommended to me by a coworker due to the "hardcore living" of the author. I haven't read it yet, but look forward to it.

An Excellent must read in contemporary literaterature!
Review created: 09/06/09(updated 09/06/09)

The late Frank McCourt weaves together tragedy, coming of age, and comedy in this compelling telling of his childhood in Ireland and final "escape" to America. It's a modern Charles Dickens - a story of hardship and triumph over adversity in the twentieth century. It's also a heartfelt story of family ties and the power of love. Though the story starts out slow told from a small child's point of view it picks up momentum as Frank matures and sees the world through changing eyes. I highly recommend this book to admirer's of Ireland and good literature!

I actually read this book in my English class. And I loved it. For me, it's more than a book but a historic event that represents the true life for poor people in Ireland during that time....

I bought the book a while back and I got a great deal. I love to shop on ebay because there are always people who have no use for the stuff they sell so they give you a great bargain. I have not yet read the book , but I need to get to it soon enough.

This was an excellent book. I read this years ago and wanted my wife to also read it. I think the situation faced in the book by the author reveals a lot of the human spirit in wanting to overcome adversity. I would recommend this book to anyone. It can be hard to follow at times but is overall an excellent reading book.

  Not for me...

I bought this book because I heard Frank McCourt's story on TV and wanted to read it for myself. Unfortunately, I found it to be a very difficult read. I didn't make it past the first chapter.

  Very good read...

My friend and I had both read this book years ago. We were talking on the phone and she asked if I'd ever seen it on E-bay, because she lent it out and was never returned. I told her I'm sure it was and since her birthday was soon, it was a great deal. This book has everything, comedy, drama, despair and hope. But, if you want it to be a happy ending, you'll be a bit disappointed. You LOVE the little boy, Frank, and you keep hoping everything is going to be okay, but it's Ireland, and the times were truly hard. You have to put yourself in the boy's place, I don't know if I would have fared so well. It's definitely a page turner, because you keep waiting for something good to happen to Frankie. I might be mistaken, but I believe it won a Pulitzer Prize, it's well worth picking up and spending a rainy day in Ireland with Frankie and his family.

  Angela's Ashes

I loved this book. I enjoy true stories. My grandmother was from Ireland and came to America as a young adult in 1915. I was always curious about Ireland and feel like I have an idea about her life when she was growing up. I look forward to the day that I can visit Ireland so I can see my roots. Some of the story is very sad and as a co-worker of mine put it-depressing. This is true about some of the book but not all. This book is a very inspiring story of how Frank McCourt grew up in Ireland and worked to come to America as a young adult. Your heart will touched by his story. I have also read "Tis" and "Teacher Man"- his next two books. If you like a story that reinforces all things are possible you will enjoy this book.

Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt (1999)

i love the writing. it starts of as a child and as he grows the writing is different. it transitions and you didn't even know it. you have to read it knowing that it's a child writing not an adult. it's very sad and funny and shocking but then you realize that the time and the place was different and you kinda have to get into that place to understand it.

I read a few pages and had to start over in order to "follow" the style of writing. Overall I gained an insight into the times and having read the book it will give me a greater appreciation of the people of Ireland when I visit next year.

Angela's Ashes Is a "Must Read"
Review created: 12/08/06(updated 01/16/07)

I want everyone to have the experience of reading this book! The innocence of childhood mingled with the pain of survival in the poorest-of-poor families.

This book is wonderful, to say the least. Frank McCourt has a talent for writing through the eyes of a child. I felt like I grew up right along side him.
