Movie Description
Those who thought that smoke machines and cobwebbed candelabras were the stuff of Halloween parties and dance clubs need to think again. In Joel Schumacher's film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Broadway musical THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, these moody set devices--and countless others--make every scene an atmospheric vision of souped-up 19th-century Gothic bliss. Christine Daee (a luminescent Emmy Rossum) is a tortured young star who is haunted by the voice of the phantom (Gerard Butler--who also played the lead in DRACULA 2000), a musician who hides in the shadows to hide a facial disfigurement, yet sings to her obsessively. Dwelling in the dark, damp chambers beneath the Paris opera house, the phantom lords over the cast and management with artistic autocracy--he writes the shows, casts them, and threatens all who disobey his plans with dramatically violent outbursts. But when his young student Christine falls for the rich and dapper Raoul (Patrick Wilson), the phantom descends into madness. Webber's memorable songs are performed with aplomb by Rossum, whose background includes singing with the Metropolitan Opera, and Wilson and Butler provide ample accompaniment. One of the treats of the proceedings is Minnie Driver's deeply exaggerated portrayal of the jealous diva, giving this PHANTOM a very appropriate dose of comic relief.

Editorial Reviews
"[PHANTOM] is a rapturous spectacle. And the movie, directed full throttle by Joel Schumacher, goes the show one better....It smolders."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (12/30/2004)

"The look is dazzling....Scotsman Gerard Butler does a fine job as the charismatic, ghostly character who hides away in the opera house because of his disfigurement."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (12/22/2004)

"[T]he lavish production captivates the senses, and the musical and emotional crescendos are overpowering."
Movieline's Hollywood Life - Andre Chautard (12/01/2004)

"The beloved musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Richard Stilgoe sees a lush screen adaptation starring Emmy Rossum as Christine....Costume textures and fine details are amazingly rendered..."

      BEST MUSICAL SO FAR!
    Review created: 04/14/06

This is an EXTREMELY wonderful Musical. I rate this a big 5 out of 5. It is so far on my list - my most favorite Musical. I have watched this 6 times in the last two weeks, that is how good it is. There is nothing at all I dislike about this Musical, it is all positives for me. The actors/actresses are fantastic. This Musical has a wonderful storyline, easy to follow, you will very much enjoy "Phantom of the Opera". The scenes, backgrounds etc. are just pristine and gorgeous, they are very detailed. And the music, what can I say about the music....absolutely PERFECT!! You can't go wrong with this Musical, you will enjoy it from the very first second it starts.

Never Live Attended, More Than Passed "Phantom"
    Review created: 11/08/05

Perhaps it was company, perhaps it was day, perhaps it was cheap of cheap prices, some wild combination of all of the above, you have to see this.
I may have too many in my life movies enjoyed, and maybe I have no in person live theatre of this particular title with which to compare, but this one...this one...
    Just see it.
Incredible for colour, hitting of notes right on, costume, continuity, worse are so many others for its having been done.
On the day started with good feeling, and for lasting enjoyment of attendance and for rest of evening and at least two days following, this movie was it.

Movie of the year? Really worth 5? Too close to 4 to give 5? Reserving 5 for once a year? Every 1 in 5 is a 5? Every year has 1 in 5? Time periods?

Describe the characters? Name the stars? Consider each scene?

There's a grotto scene incredible, nearer the end much more the beginning.
    There's a falling of chandelier.
There's a number of maids wonderful.
    There's a graveyard scene.
    Others include:
    Flight to graveyard
    Fading in of old scenery
    Greying ancient move and history

If you don't give this a 5, if I really have to research whether or not this won some academy award, then your standards are from eyes of lesser days and in need of better ones.
My sympathy for what sufferings you might endured when you could have been watching this one.

If you don't agree with my 5, you must have been otherwise occupied when watching.
