Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman (2005)

Not only did the seller ship the item quickly, but the product itself was in great condition. The price of the product was fair, in other words I do not feel as if I got ripped off. Although when I originally found the product it was marked under "Good Condition" the product itself was sent to me as if it was never used. There was neither any bent marks along the corners or highlighting throughout the book. It was as if I received a brand new product. I am very pleased with my purchase, and I will return to this seller when I can.

  Bad Seller

I would not buy from this seller again. I thought that I was getting an overstocked book that was still new. It looked fine from the outside, perfect cover and pages, but as I began to read the book it started to fall apart. The pages were not even glued into the binding. The cover just fell off and as I turned the pages they became dissconnected from each other. I would not reccomend them unless you feel like binding your own book...

Mr. Postman's book Amusing Ourselves to Death was a prophetic look at the way the changes in media affects an entire civilization. His contention is simple enough: as the vehicle for information changes from typography (the written word) to things like television and the internet, it will fulfill what Aldous Huxley feared in his book the Brave New World, that namely information will be trivialized to the point that a civilization will destroy itself through lethargy. He points out that television today is simply entertainment. The news is like a talk show, with music, and visual effects designed to increase ratings as much as possible. Mr. Postman is not anti-television, instead he zeros in on news shows, and other "serious" type talk shows, pointing out that these shows cannot pass for news and that no topic can be seriously discussed in 30 seconds to 1 minute. It's interesting to see him compare our media/tv culture with the reading/book type culture of the 1800's. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

THE AUTHOR EXPLAINS TO US HOW PASSIVE AND NON-INTERACTIVE SOCIETY HAS BECOME THROUGH THE MEDIA AS A MEDIUM. WE TAKE FOR GRANTED WHAT IS SPOON FED FROM TV NEWS , TALK SHOWS, NEWSPAPERS AND OTHER VISUAL AND OR PRINT MEDIAS. VERY ENLIGHTENING IF GIVEN A CHANCE TO READ THE BOOK.
