Comprehensive A to Z overview of Standard Gauge Trains
10 of 15 people found this review helpful.
A novice collector of antique electric toy trains is faced with a formidable task in terms of developing a familiarity with original examples of a product that ceased production before World War II. This book does an excellent job of providing a historical perspective on the development of Standard Gauge Trains by Lionel in 1906 and on its evolution through the early part of the twentieth century. It details the Early and Classic Periods of Lionel Standard Gauge production and includes many interesting historical anecdotes. Competing manufacturers are showcased, including Ives, American Flyer, Boucher and Dorfan.
What makes this book unique however is its comprehensive approach to Standard Gauge. There are other Standard Gauge references that outline the various types of locomotives and rolling stock with information on value. This book goes far beyond pricing and includes chapters on building a Standard Gauge layout and the re-introduction of Standard Gauge trains, track and accessories in modern times. The later is critical to developing an ability to identify reproductions of famous antique Standard Gauge equipment such as Lionel Classics, Williams Reproductions, McCoy Manufacturing and others.
A Value quide for originals is provided with notations regarding reproductions contained under each listing.
Since this book was published in 1998 you should use the values listed as a starting point in determining value and consult more recent publications and market price sources, such as eBay for current information. This book is a must as a permanent reference in any Standard Gauge Collector's Library.
