Governor Ross Barnett, along with the Mississippi state police and thousands of civilians, had blocked his admission, and President Kennedy made a historic decision--one with great risk, that threatened to open old wounds from the Civil War. Author Doyle presents the story as it played on the streets of Oxford, on the campus of the university, and in Washington, DC.
