This is only a Partial Review, so I hope it helps
The author is a New Deal scholar and liberal advocate, a professor at Columbia University, a rather leftist institution. Like most Social Science professors today, he's pretty far out - what most people used to term a "socialist". Often such professors write from an anti-American, Marxist point of view, so that their "histories" are heavily tainted with attacks on western civilization, and America in particular. I hope to get an old edition of this book soon in order to see what he has done; until then my "average" rating above is just based on the author's worldview, not the book itself. Yes, textbooks are not like they were in the 1950s: today you end up feeling guiltly just for being American. I don't think that's a good thing. It's because Marxists confuse weakness with goodness.
