The focus of this film should have been on the LA scene more than NY, and DC. There was hardly anything with regards to SF as well. These are the areas where the hardcore scene started, truly blossomed as well as imploded.
Dorks are dorks I guess, as we have seen many of these young punkers tried to find their fame and fortune, by working at your local fast food joint or lying in some sort of gutter keeping it real! They have the world up their ass, and I get to pay my taxes to cover their medical expenses.

The Adolescents ruled that scene and the movie should have wrapped itself around Tony. He as well as the rest of the band had a handle on their path, views, and power! . Where were the descendants???? So many missed opportunities geez... Keith Morris, and Hank Rollins, go die..

....Besides this is a great documentary on real hardcore. all you people who think Thrice and Thursday is HARDCORE, you're wrong. Watch this documentary, it will change your whole outlook on what HARDCORE really is. If you're interested in the history of one of the most DIY punk movements there is, grab this movie.

  American Hardcore

American Hardcore is an excellent film for the simple fact that it documents what was the uprising of hardcore punk rock circa early 80s. Where "straight edge" sprouted from and where the scene kinda built its own demise. Overall excellent documentation, having members of Black Flag, TSOL, Circle Jerks, Cro-Mags, Minor Threat, Minutemen, Bad Brains and many others describe exactly how it was growing up and being part of that Hardcore Movement. The only fault I found in the production of this Document is that the Dead Kennedys were mentioned, but no interview was done with any member of that band. Jello Biafra, being the main voice of DK and a Huge influence of the DIY Hardcore Punk rock movement was no even acknowledged. Yes you had all members of Bad Brains telling you all of their movement, but that was east coast, West Coast was the Dead Kennedys. The film makes it as if Black Flag were the ambassadors of the west coast given they founded SST records, and yes Black Flag was great, but you cannot deny that DK were the ones that started or at least had a huge influence on the Hardcore movement( on the west coast at least). There is great insight to be found of what was the mentality of these "punk rockers", the film does not disappoint and many great forgotten bands are featured as part of the ongoing soundtrack through the film. A "where are they now" feature would have been entertaining, but this is aint not VH1 behind the the music, its Punk Rock. Love it or Hate it, it was the voice of a generation. Dig it.

The History of American Punk Rock 1980 - 1986
Review created: 04/23/08(updated 04/24/08)

"Normal people didn't listen to hardcore, and we liked it that way!" Oh man, another trip down memory lane! Unseen footage of all the great bands I grew up listening to. Minor Threat, Circle Jerks, Black Flag and so many more I can't begin to name them all. From D.I.Y. to Straight-Edge from coast to coast, it covers it all. What I loved most was seeing all the old timers from back in the day and how they look now. When you're old and feel like one of the dying breeds in a town full of Joe Blows, it's nice to see these guys still kicking. Their uniqueness and character still hold true. This video documents the real hardcore subculture from it's roots. It's sorta of the hardcore version of Decline of Western Civilization. The misfit kids of the Reagan years are sure to enjoy this and I am sure the younger crowd who have a nostalgia of this era will love and respect it as well.

  DISAPPOINTING
Review created: 05/24/07

AMERICAN HARDCORE.....LET'S SEE...WELL THE BOOK WAS REAL GOOD, BUT THE MOVIE WAS QUITE DISAPPOINTING. THEY GO OVER AND OVER WITH THE SAME BANDS AND LEAVING OUT A TON OF BANDS THAT HAD A BIG INFLUENCE IN THE SCENE BACK IN THE DAY. MOST NOTABLY THE DEAD KENNEDYS AND THE MISFITS. I EXPECTED THIS MOVIE TO BE MORE LIKE THE BOOK BUT IT WASNT.

I saw this in theater on opening day when it came here. I thought it was good in house so I bought it on DVD right away. It is WELL worth seeing although the suspiciously leave out a few bands that I thought would have had merit to be in the film. The odd part about that especially is that they actually interviewed some of the bands that I thought should have been on there. The focus extra attention on Bad Brains and Minor Threat as compared to everyone else, if you are into EITHER of those bands you HAVE to buy it. If you are into 80's hardcore punk, you really SHOULD by it.
