This is a very imaginative book. I have a hard time finding books that can keep me guessing, but this one doesn't give away any clues as what is happening next. I like this book because it intertwines the real world with myths & legends which made me wonder - could it all be real? What really does happen in the world around us that we just can't see - or that we just don't pay attention to?
Gaiman is a great author and now I'm going to buy his other books.

My friend, whose opinion on books is very high to me, recommended this book to me. Also, the author of His Dark Materials, on my favorite novels, Phillip Pullman, also recommended it. That being said, I had very high expectations for this one. And I must say that I was not disappointed. I enjoyed it very much, reading chapters at a time. The characters are very interesting and complex. Plot twists through-out keep things interesting. There are points where there is not much action, but the book is so well-written and the characters themselves, as well as the story-line and plot, are so interesting, action is almost unecessary. At points, its possible to be slightly confused as to whats happening. Just brace yourself for a great finale where everything comes together quite well. I highly recommend this novel.

A dark story that almost turns its own pages

If you like any of the Neil Gaiman graphic novels, you will of course enjoy this. This book is full of great characters and if you are trying to figure out what will happen next, you don't stand a chance. Each turn of the page takes you in a direction you weren't expecting in a story that keeps you guessing and turning the pages.

The book is big, it makes you think and takes you away to places you could never have dreamed up yourself. The story is complex and engaging and incredibly well written. It will take everything you know of religion and the past and mix it all up to make you rethink everything from history to human interaction.

American Gods is one of my favorite books of all time,
Review created: 12/03/09

American Gods is about the gods of other countries who were brought over to America by immigrants and then forgotten about and left to fend for themselves. It's a fascinating concept and Niel Gaiman is fantastic.

Gaiman never fails to keep me glued to the pages 'til the very end. He weaves a perfectly believable alternate reality inside of our own with characters rooted in the cultural past of America. His stories are as good as Steven King's, but without the rambeling.

American Gods -you can't put it down!

I bought the book to re-read and to share with my friends. It is a riviting story that draws you in and carries you along with it. The story is not predictible and a real page turner. It helps to have some knowledge of mythology to really appreciate the story, but you can follow it without the knowledge. I will undoubtedly read this book many times. I highly recommend it!

Get away from wands, wizards, and leprechauns that are small. This novel twists and turns leaving the reader not knowing if they should laugh or groan in anguish. Very original and thought out.

  Where Have the Gods Gone?
Review created: 01/11/08

I like Neil Gaiman and was blown away when I first read him (Anansi Boys.) I'm glad I read that one first, even though American Gods is kind of a prequel. I liked this book a lot, but found that it lacked some of the lighthearted whimsy in Anansi. This one covers the same material (Gods interacting with regular people in modern day life) but this one is a bit darker. The main character -- Shadow -- is an interesting guy though. This is a good read.

  Did not get the pont.

While some of the book was enjoyable, I felt the story just rambled on & on.
I can understand why some might enjoy this book. But, it was just an average read to me.
