Highly recommeded Adams
This documentary, like nearly all PBS documentaries, is very well made and researched. Most people know Ansel's heroic landscapes, but what is revealed about Adams is that he was also an incredibly driven mountaineer and an accomplished concert pianist, and a founding member of Group F64. This group that first exhibited at the De Young Museum in San Francisco included Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham, Alma Lavenson, Willard VanDyke, Peter Stackpole, to mention a few. This group would make photographic history, collectively and separately, ushering in modernism and “straight photography.” We also learn that Adams' work was praised by Alfred Stieglitz who exhibited Ansel's photos in his New York Gallery. This documentary lets the viewer get to know the real Ansel Adams, a complex, creative, caring spirit that the world owes a debt of gratitude for his contributions to nature conservation and art.
