American Dreamer (DVD, 2005, Widescreen Collection)

American Dreamer is a fantastic movie about a housewife who loves reading Rebecca Ryan mystery books. She enters a contest in which she wrote a chapter in the style of the Rebecca Ryan novels and wins a trip to Paris. Upon her arrival, she bumps her head and when she wakes up, she thinks she is Rebecca Ryan. She then meets some wonderful and some not-so-wonderful people and has great adventures. It is worth your time and money to check out this movie!

One of my wife's and my favorite movies of all time!! Funny and quirky and VERY entertaining. A movie that you can watch over and over and still love. I highly recommend this one!

A great, corny, romantic old movie. Full of action and madcap humor. A good reverse of adventuresome heros and gal pal movies. Great clothes help to make it a good chick-flick. JoBeth Williams is an unde-rated actress who makes a spoof look good. Tom Conti provides the right touch as the pal who must figure out what is going on as he falls for the amnesiac imposter. Great for sharing with girlfriends or viewing by oneself on popcorn movie nights.

If you would like to spend a couple hours being entertained, check into this movie. Get some popcorn, soda, candy, whatever you want and you can watch a movie and not have to suffer over social injustice, or the sad state of the country, world, universe. Just prepare to have a jolly good time being entertained.

I already had the VHS of this movie and loved it so much I wanted to DVD which I thought would be more indestructible. I have watched the DVD and it is great! This is a light hearted movie that I would watch over and over again! Thanks!

A real oldie but very goodie. This movie played in a limited way when it was first distributed. I never saw it in a theater but rented it when it was available. Have watched it many times and it never gets old. Wonderful characters, great plot, and perfectly cast. Watch it once and you will have to own it.

I bought this movie as a gift for my mother-in-law. She had always talked abouth this movie, but said that she had never seen it anywhere to buy. For her birthday, I found it on ebay and she was soooo surprised. It was a great gift.

This could be considered a sleeper. Entertaining, moves right along, and the acting is well done by Jo Beth Williams and Tom Conti. Enjoyed this movie very much.

I love this movie, its great fun for the whole family. I have wanted it in dvd for a long time, (had it in vhs), it is a movie you will watch and enjoy time and time again.

I don't like slapstick comedy, I like a more subtle humor and American Dreamer is filled with subtle humor. It has everything that appeals to me in a movie: romance, mystery, humor, drama.

I don't always feel the cast in some movies are well matched, but I don't think they could have found better actors/actresses to play these parts.

I saw the movie on TV years ago and enjoyed it. Since purchasing the DVD I've enjoyed it many times, and always find the playing on words, etc. funny. There are only a few movies I enjoy enough to see repeatedly, but this is certainly one of them.

One of my favorite movies of all time, clever, witty, sophisticated, touching, and oh so very, very funny. A delight from beginning to end. Excellent well rounded cast with a marvelous script.

"American Dreamer" falls into that rare category of "lets watch it again" or let's watch it every 6 months. It's refreshing fun for the entire family without being boring for mature viewers. This is one of those rare movie treasures incorporating the background (Paris) into the story and is the equal to "Breaking Away" and "The Milagro Beanfield War" both are unhyped comedic classics. Good fun and it wont collect dust on your library shelf.

I absolutely love this movie. I own the vhs version, but wanted the dvd so it would last longer and be better mastered. This movie is about a suburban house wife named Cathy. She has a husband who is very traditional and works long hours. The only excitment in her life are the Rebecca Ryan novels that she reads and gets lost in. She enters a writing contest, in which she is obligated to write a short piece. The contestant that writes the most like the author of the Rebecca Ryan novels would win a all expenses trip to Paris. Cathy wins the contest and is forbided to go by her husband who is very head strong. Cathy goes regardless. Upon her arrival she gets hit by a car, causing her to wake up from a coma like state and believe she is Rebecca Ryan. After meeting the author in which she feels is another character in the novels, she drags him into one adventure after another. The fun then begins and you just get so wraped up in her character. It is a wonderful movie.

My wife and I viewed this movie many years ago and when we saw it available on DVD we bought it right away. It is a lot of fun to watch and one of our favorite movies. I highly recomend it.

Best 80's chick flick ever. Loved the theme of romance novelist gone awry as perfectly portrayed by JoBeth Williams. Loved Tom Conti's performance as the thoroughly confused hero. Loved the twist ending. Have introduced it to the under-20 generation and altho they laugh at the fashions, they also fell for the fun, from first dangerous meeting to the required happy ending.

This is one of the most underappreciated comedies around! I have enjoyed the vhs version for years & the DVD is so much better.
JoBeth Williams is wonderful as Rebecca Ryan & plays so well against Tom Conte. The scene where she breezes into his Flat with thousands of dollars of new designer clothes is priceless!
The action is great & much more subtle than the credits would indicate.

American Dreamer is a favorite in our house. Comedy and action that build upon each other. I was thrilled to find it available in DVD as our VHS tape was wearing out.

This is a great movie. I have watched it on a VHS tape many times and wanted to upgrade to DVD. Funny, romantic comedy with good twists. JoBeth Williams and Tom Conti are great in this movie!

I taped this movie of HBO many years ago and it's a movie I love to watch over and over. I'm so glad it's out on DVD, it's a treat to see a clearer version. I liked this movie because Jobeth Williams is fantastic in it, and the rest of the cast is great as well. Once Jobeth Williams goes to Paris and becomes "Rebecca Ryan" the fun really starts. I love the fact that she is so serious and funny at the same time, you don't know what to expect from her. This movie is one of my top 10 favorites.

This is my favorite romantic comedy. It was like Cary Grant and Catherine Hepburn had teamed up again. It was full of fun, romance,fantasy and a little intrigue. It was a real escape for us "everyday housewives."
