Synopsis At the age of 10, Abby Sher lost both her father and her beloved aunt. Shortly after she began a series of increasingly compulsive behaviors: repeatedly kissing her father's picture, picking up sharp objects that could hurt people, and, eventually, praying over and over in her closet in the belief that she was saving people from harm. While her diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive behavior makes sense to her, Sher refuses to believe that her intense relationship with a higher power is merely the result of a mental illness. In her fascinating and frequently funny memoir AMEN, AMEN, AMEN, Sher discusses the complex issues of where an illness ends and where your identity begins, and passionately describes her religious beliefs and the other great love of her life: comedy.
