Amcor 3900 GPS

This is a VERY GOOD low cost GPS for the money. These just work well and do exactly what you need and are under $100 (at one time, Linens & Things was selling them for $80 brand new, free shipping). They have voice guidance but do not have text-to-speech (e.g it gives you turn-by-turn directions, but it doesn't pronounce street names).
The downside of these is that it really doesn't come with a manual (I think that there is a "soft" manual on the CD, but most people will never see that much less take the time to study it), and it takes a bit of effort to learn how to use and configure these so that they do what they do well and the way you want it (there are a lot of configurable options and settings (dozens if not a hundred or more) and the defaults are probably not what you want). Also, the preloaded POIs (points of interest) are not great and hard to use (people who have hacked these have found out how to edit the POI list and add their own).
The map system has an "airplane mode" and I took one of these on a US commercial airline flight and it even worked inside the plane (I did have a Window seat) (no, there is nothing wrong with using one in a plane after they allow use of personal electronic devices).
Another interesting fact is that this is a general purpose "Windows Mobile" (Pocket PC) device that just happens to be running GPS software. They can be hacked, quite easily, to get back to the Windows Mobile desktop and use them for other purposes, or even install other GPS software instead of what comes with them. They have an SD card slot that can take up to a 4GB card (does not support SDHC), and you can actually do quite a bit with these (other than the supplied GPS functionality). You have a general purpose Windows Mobile device with a color touch screen, GPS receiver, sound system, removeable "hard drive" (the SD card slot) and the OS is on ROM inside the unit. But you REALLY have to know what you are doing, and risk ruining the device, if you start mucking around this way. A web search for Amcor 3900 will find lots of references on this subject.
If the price is reasonable (well under $100) I highly recommend these, just be sure you get all the pieces that came with a new unit (GPS unit itself, Power charger/adapter, CD, 1GB SD Card preloaded with maps, mounting bracket (3 pieces), storage pouch).
