I must admit that before seeing the new film Amazing Grace, I knew almost nothing about William Wilberforce. I suspect that is true of many people—but I hope that will change as a result of this depiction of his part in the long struggle to end the slave trade in the British colonies in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It's a remarkable and inspiring tale.

The film draws its title from the great hymn written by John Newton, a former slave-ship captain who became an evangelical pastor after a dramatic conversion experience. Newton was instrumental in Wilberforce's own spiritual journey, as Newton was one of many people who encouraged Wilberforce to remain in politics when, in his early 20s and newly elected to parliament, Wilberforce experienced a profound spiritual awakening and resolved to dedicate his life to God. Newton, among others (including Wilberforce's school friend, William Pitt, who was to became Britain's youngest prime minister at the age of 24), helped him to see that his talent for politics might be part of God's call, rather than a distraction from it.

One of the many things this film gets right is its depiction of that struggle. That Wilberforce was a person of faith is evident in every frame, yet his faith is woven into a complete picture of the man. This is one of the better movie examples I've seen of what a struggle to live out one's faith looks like. And the film makes plain why Wilberforce would assume that politics and a life of devotion might be mutually exclusive—the world of politics is scrappy and frustrating and filled with moral compromise. Some of the scenes of debate in the House of Commons are positively scary. The viewer comes away with a surprisingly clear sense of how an idea that now seems so obviously right—ending the brutal slave trade—was so unthinkable at the time that it took two decades to pass a bill accomplishing it, despite the overwhelming evidence that Wilberforce and his collaborator amassed against the trade.

The familiar hymn proves a wonderful backdrop for the story. "Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see." The words express the power of Wilberforce's own conversion experience (and Newton's); they also express the necessity of grace in overcoming human blindness writ large. As the story of the fight for abolition unfolds, one gains a sense that social change, particularly on this scale, does not happen without a huge measure of grace. Vast injustices like the conditions on the slave ships, described here in heartbreaking detail, simply could not stand were it not for monumental blindness—usually fueled, as it is here, by greed and fear. And the human beings who take on the task of reform are themselves flawed and plagued by their own failures of vision: When to compromise? When to voice righteous indignation? When to push and when to hold back? When to give up? Where to find the will to continue fighting a just cause that seems to be proving impossible? One wonders how change ever happens, and yet somehow it does. This film depicts a wonderful example of how grace brings about good and necessary shifts in the balance of power, working through flawed human vessels.

THIS IS A MUST BUY

A Film that Depicts Real, not Phony, Character

Excellent historical presentation of a giant individual who changed the world and saved Britain, but was then dropped from the history books. I'm so wearied by Hollywood's phony macho heroes who display typical cavalier courage, always know what to do, and then casually save the world. The movie depicts the truth of greatness as it tracks WW's many obstacles, failures, and uncertainties, i.e., it is true. The movie is excellent but it does appeal to those who can follow the intricate of (verbal) political confrontation. It may not appeal to shallow action addicts either - there are no explosions, no gunfire, no car chases! Teens, if you are looking for a role model, you should see this one.

I bought this documentary after watching the making of it on television. I call it a documentary because of its historic soundness. I love history and watched this with my husband and two children 12 and 11 years of age. They felt it was excellent and would watch it over and over. I purchased this for several people over christmas who also loved the film.

This is one of the best historical movies I have seen in a long time. They kept to the period and the original story line. The story was easy to follow and great for anyone who loves history.

The film is not,as suggested by some of the advertising, really about the song Amazing Grace, or the man who wrote Amazing Grace and is portrayed by a secondary character in the movie. It is about Wilbur Wilberforce, who despite physical ills and doubts sought to serve God by banning British slave trading. It is beautifully photographed and well acted, ultimately ending in triumph after 20 years of slowly converting Members of Parliament, and using political tricks to accomplish victory. I loved it.

You have to watch this and then consider things that are going on now in our day that need the same kind of devotion in trying to change. For example our "slave trade issue" today I believe is abortion. What are we going to do about the fact these are innocent lives that we are killing? These are precious creations with God's breath put into them.

A Story You Will Never Forget!

I bought the movie because of the HISTORY behind it. Although almost ignored in school history classes until recently, Wilberforce had an AWESOME impact on contemporary British and American society and mores. The movie was so well paced and well-acted that it held me SPELLBOUND! It was like a trip back in time! It is hard to imagine a society where slavery and the slave trade were not only ACCEPTED, but DEFENDED! "Amazing Grace" portrays that society, and even better, the means used by the Chatham Circle to CHANGE the minds and hearts of that society! It's an inspiration about how Christianity can and should impact the culture of any time... then or now! Highly recommended!

For once, a movie with excellent dialogue. For once a movie with no distracting special effects, just great acting and a truly inspiring story of how one man worked against all odds in England to finally and decisively eliminate slavery. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in a true accounting of history.

How many people know that the author of the hymn Amazing Grace owned a slave ship? That he atoned for his sin by dedicating the rest of his life to asking God's forgiveness. If this is not inspirational, I don't know what is.

Excellent drama, but not for whole family

I bought this film, Amazing Grace, after reading a review I read on the Christianbook.com. It tell the story of William Wilburforce, who, as a Member of Parliament, navigated the world of 18th Century backroom politics to end the slave trade in the British Empire. I live in Hungary, so I wasn't able to see it in the theater. I loved watching how one man can made a difference in the world; how he could serve in politics and still serve God; how, when he was burnt out, he was able to be brought out of the fatigue and depression and gain new vision to finish what he started. What he and his circle of friends were able to do was phenomenal! I would recommend this to everyone who enjoys a good, deep film. However, it IS about slavery, which is a gruesome topic. There are some graphic descriptions and scenes that may not be good for children (my 9-yr old daughter was a bit confused and upset). But your children may be different!

A true story and a must see --especially when you need to be inspired.
A great example of how one person can change the world and a reminder to NEVER give up no matter the opposition. I am thankful this story was finally brought to the screen and so well done.

Amazing Grace-- The Cold Hard Facts
Review created: 12/26/07

If you are looking for a historically accurate story about the ending of the slave trade that doesn't mince or beautify the hard facts-- this dvd is for you. If you are looking for an exciting action packed dvd-- look elsewhere.
Although I have studied the life of John Newton, I was short on facts about William Wilberforce. This movie changes that...
In spite of the title, this film is not what I would call a Christian film, but it is full of high morals and a story that everyone, Christian or not, can and should learn from. I am glad that I chose to buy this movie and would recommend it to anyone.

  Truly Inspiring!

I Loved this movie for so many reasons but the main reason this movie was so special to me is the fact that slavery was such a horrific and dark period in English History and it was looked upon as the normal treatment of sub humans. This movie makes you feel the pain that Wilberforce felt for his fellow man, and the anguish and hard work that he put into making the abolition of slavery his #1 Purpose in Life. Another great element was Wilberforce's friendship with the Prime Minister who spurred him on to Greatness throughout his life.

  Amazing Grace (2007, DVD)

Amazing Grace, the movie, was so deeply moving one begins to get an inkling of an idea of the work Wilber Wilberforce accomplished. The costuming and scene set up bring one into the mood of the time in which it was set. There were no scenes of slaves aboard ships or the dumping of slaves as in Amistad; but the scene, where the elite are taken past a slave ship while leisurely boating, is just as effective. I highly recommend this film.

This is a great film. Certainly suitable for groups or classes.

This story reminds us that faith - of any kind - is never in isolation. It matters what we believe, and any faith that matters makes a difference not only in our individual lives, but also in those around us. Perhaps even those we will never meet.

A must have! this is not recommended for younger audiences, as it covers some subject matter about the slave trade that would be scary or traumatic to small children. It is however a wonderful movie, with very nice filming. You can sit back and enjoy your history well seeing it.

I loved this movie. First of all I enjoy movies based on true stories and second of all, the hero never stopped standing up for what he believed in and that goes a long way for me. This movie is too mature for the little ones because of some of the issues that are brought up, but it is an excellent choice for kids 12 and up although parents may have to explain some things. In any event, I recommend reviewing the movie first before allowing kids to watch it but there is no foul language or sexual content to worry about.

Amazing Grace is a must-have for any family movie library. Idealist William Wilberforce of 18th century British Parliament, fights to rid England of the slave trade. Also tells the tale of how the song, Amazing grace, was written. Visually gorgeous, wonderful acting, compelling story. An inspiring tale of leadership, persistance, and fighting for what's right even against all odds. This story will leave you wanting to make a difference in the world, too. May not be suitable for young children due to subject matter and mild language. Parents should view prior to allowing young children to watch this.

I have become disenchanted with many movies for their unnecessary use of foul language or sex. This movie gets the point across and keeps you interested in the movie with out resorting to similar ploys and is a masterful work of art with very good acting. Well worth watching and rewatching.
