Album Notes A Nina Rota tribute from producer Hal Willner, who later produced THAT'S THE WAY I FEEL NOW: A TRIBUTE TO THELONIUS MONK and LOST IN THE STARS: A TRIBUTE TO KURT WEILL. Engineers: Vince McGarry, Michael Mantler, Ken Hahn. Includes liner notes by Leonard Maltin, Federico Fellini, Peter Keepnews, and Hal Willner. Taking a cue from the witty, eclectic style of Carla Bley, this Hal Willner-produced tribute to the great Italian movie composer Nino Rota lent the late '70s New York jazz scene some welcome cultural cachet. All of a sudden there were hip artists who actually saw a Fellini movie and, even better, were able to hum the tunes! (Young Wynton Marsalis makes an appearance here.) Carla Bley herself is in masterly form in a big-band arrangement and performance of the music from the film 8 1/2. AMARCORD is also where the storied career of producer Willner got its start, succeeding beautifully his very first time out. There is such an imaginative depth permeating very track here, i.e., Steve Lacy's pagan soprano-and-gong duet during "Satyricon" or Bill Frisell's 12-string mediations on "Juliet Of The Spirits." The album also features the piano artistry of the late Jaki Byard, who closes the set with a poignant "La Strada," which perfectly matches the melancholy mood of that justly famous film.
