Altered Beast is one of the original video games that shipped with the Sega Genesis systems before the popular Sonic the Hedgehog was released. Like Sonic The Hedgehog, this is one game you will enjoy playing if for no other reason that the cool graphics.
The object of the game is obviously to win, but besides that, the goal is to destroy all the zombie creatures who want to kill you and defeat the beast at the end of the level.
The game is like many video games, in that the screen scrolls while the character walks, and enemies pop up in front and behind. Like other Sega Games, the character can move forward, move backward (To the edge of the visible screen), punch, kick, jump and squat. (Nothing especially exciting)
One of the cool things about Altered Beast is the power-ups. As you kill the evil mummies leading up to the boss at the end of each level, you have the possibility to gather up power-balls. As you gather these floating balls of energy, your character becomes stronger in all aspects until finally it alters into a werewolf. In order to defeat the boss at the end of each level, you just about have to have enough power-balls collected and transform into the Altered Beast before you get to the end. It's not impossible to defeat the boss without them, but it's not easy.
Unfortunately this game only has five levels, and while they do get more challenging, with practice you should be able to win someday. That should make some of you happy!
I still find the game a little challenging when I haven't played it for a while, and get my butt kicked by the boss, but that's o.k.
The game moves at a steady speed forwards and basically, you just pound the crap out of as many zombies, flying animals and frustrating running animals like Pigs, Were-Hogs and other beast and within no time, your staring face to face with the boss who at first looks like a bald headed monk that transforms into a seriously gnarly looking monster intent on kicking your face in.
Altered Beast remains one of my favorite games, though not on my top pick list, merely because quite a few games that came out after Altered Beast seemed really similar. I prefer more toonish games with stupid themes like Boogerman for instance. If you like Golden Axe, you'll enjoy this game.
