  GREAT GAME BUT!!!!

The original arcade version of Altered Beast was a terrific game, and this emulated version is a pale, weak version of the game it tries so hard to be. The game's slow speed and the lack of a two-player mode are inexcusable flaws. The Zodiac's Bluetooth feature would have made cooperative play simple to include. But as if to rub it in, the game actually asks you, before starting up the game, to be sure you have disabled Bluetooth. In its incomplete, single-player state, Altered Beast is inferior to its predecessor and not worth buying if you're a Zodiac owner.

Altered Beast is one of the original video games that shipped with the Sega Genesis systems before the popular Sonic the Hedgehog was released. Like Sonic The Hedgehog, this is one game you will enjoy playing if for no other reason that the cool graphics.

The object of the game is obviously to win, but besides that, the goal is to destroy all the zombie creatures who want to kill you and defeat the beast at the end of the level.

The game is like many video games, in that the screen scrolls while the character walks, and enemies pop up in front and behind. Like other Sega Games, the character can move forward, move backward (To the edge of the visible screen), punch, kick, jump and squat. (Nothing especially exciting)

One of the cool things about Altered Beast is the power-ups. As you kill the evil mummies leading up to the boss at the end of each level, you have the possibility to gather up power-balls. As you gather these floating balls of energy, your character becomes stronger in all aspects until finally it alters into a werewolf. In order to defeat the boss at the end of each level, you just about have to have enough power-balls collected and transform into the Altered Beast before you get to the end. It's not impossible to defeat the boss without them, but it's not easy.

Unfortunately this game only has five levels, and while they do get more challenging, with practice you should be able to win someday. That should make some of you happy!

I still find the game a little challenging when I haven't played it for a while, and get my butt kicked by the boss, but that's o.k.

The game moves at a steady speed forwards and basically, you just pound the crap out of as many zombies, flying animals and frustrating running animals like Pigs, Were-Hogs and other beast and within no time, your staring face to face with the boss who at first looks like a bald headed monk that transforms into a seriously gnarly looking monster intent on kicking your face in.

Altered Beast remains one of my favorite games, though not on my top pick list, merely because quite a few games that came out after Altered Beast seemed really similar. I prefer more toonish games with stupid themes like Boogerman for instance. If you like Golden Axe, you'll enjoy this game.

I remember playing this in the arcade.....seemed to be much harder there LOL. This is a really awesome fun game to play but it is really short...I mean if you dont beat it in an hour then you must have been side tracked by something. All in all i will still go back to it ocassionally to remind myself of what life was before mmorpg's....ahhhh the good ol'days

Its the nastalgia the newer high tech games are great but I think that the older games are more challenging. They are like the the classic cars of the 1950's and 1960's they seem to stand out from the other stuff. Its the saying that they don't make things like they used too.

  Rise From Your Grave
Review created: 06/05/07
by:

Um, there isn’t too much to write about. This game is super old, but has not lost its touch. It is one of my classically favorite games for the Sega and I am glad to have it again! (now all I need is a new Genesis because mine is slowly dying!! (@_@ Its been dying for 6 years now!)

Every once and a while I bust out my Genesis and play Streets of Rage, Mutant Academy Football, Samurai Showdown, and Barbie (don’t laugh! It was hard!)
The games of yore are nothing like the present games. This game is classically fun, and for it’s time tantalizingly scary. (at least to me, I was like 4 when I played this) It has some of the most memorable punch lines: “Welcome to your doom”, “Rise from your Grave”. When I say that to gamers of that time they all know what I am talking about.

It is by no means difficult though, its and old game. What used to take me 20 minutes of trying is only taking me 5, and that’s me casually playing!!
I only got to the third level before my Sega Died completely <(;_;)> but it is fun!! I highly recommend this to anyone who has a Sega Genesis, or is buying one, to round up a group of friends, play, and enjoy!

A great demonstration of the Genesis, but not much else
Review created: 03/04/07
by:

This was the first Genesis game I played, but considering that before Sonic most Genesis consoles came with Altered beast, that isn't too surprising. Being only in Jr. High when I got my Genesis, I didn't have much money to go and spend on new games, so I had to make due with what I had. Unfortunately, Altered Beast didn't have much substance to it and I was forced to play my NES until I was able to get more Genesis games.

The graphics are incredible. Anyone who played the arcade version will noticed how closely the two versions are. The enemies are huge and detailed as well as the backgrounds. The sounds are great with digitized voice samples and music that helps set up an atmosphere.

Unfortunately, gameplay must of been an afterthought for the developers. The levels are short and there are only five in total. An average player would get through this game in a couple of hours, if that. After you finish the game, you get to play through it again, only this time it is more difficult. This was a trait common in arcade ports and other early video games. This didn't really add to the gameplay and, to me, seemed unnecessarily repetitious.

Altered Beast was a great showcase of the Genesis power of the day, but really there wasn't much else to it. I quickly grew bored and went back to playing my NES where I had much more games and more importantly, games with longevity. Eventually I would get more Genesis games and the Genesis is now my favorite system of all time, but Altered Beast didn't give me a great first impression of the Genesis.

Altered Beast: - RISE FROM MEDIOCRITY... OR NOT
Review created: 09/26/06
by: jeremy1456-- a member of Epinions and Lead in Games

Pros:
A Few of the Levels Feature Colorful Backgrounds

Cons:
Everything Else

Illegitimate classics are the topic of this discussion today. These are games which, while remembered fondly by many, are just plain not fun even when compared to similar games from the same time period. Today we've got a prime example for you with Sega's Altered Beast for their 16-bit Genesis console. Why exactly, could Altered Beast be considered an illegitimate classic? Read on to find out. I'll be honest here, my first exposure to this game was on the Sega Smashpack for Dreamcast. Since then I somehow acquired a physical copy of the Genesis cartridge, lucky me right? Wrong. Dead wrong. In.

  RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE!!!

by: flash-hammer -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Absolutely Hilarious

Cons:
Absolutely Terrible

One of Sega's most famous games, and the original pack-in title for the Genesis/Megadrive console, Altered Beast started it's life in the arcades, where it proved to be quite a success, before being one of the first big-name games to make the transition to Sega's new 16-Bit box of wonders. I'll be honest with you, I nevr owned, nor played Altered Beast at the time of it's release in the late 1980s, while I was one of the first people I knew to upgrade to the 16-Bit era, Altered Beast was still before my time, so it wasn't until a friend recalled it fondly during a conversation about the...

Pros:
some good graphics for the day

Cons:
bad sound, bad gameplay, and pretty much bad everything else.

I am going to be reviewing this game from the Sega Genesis Collection, I have played this one the genesis once years ago, and I have played it in more then enough collection to tell you one thing about this game. It s not that great, in fact it borders on being rather bad. Before Sonic came along the Sega Genesis had this game has the pack in for it s genesis console. The first couple years the Genesis was beaten down and one of the things they did to compete with Nintendo was to take this game out and put in the much better Sonic the Hedgehog as the pack in game. Story Athena has been...

Pros:
Classic nostalgic Sega action. Good graphics too.

Cons:
Beat it once and you might never play it again. So short!

Ahhhhhh, Altered Beast. That brings back the memories. If you're reading this review, you probably either have never played this game and want to know if it's worth buying, or you're part of the majority and are just reading it for fun and memories like the reason I'm writing it. Haahaa. No, seriously. I'll review it good. The Sega Genesis was released in the United States in 1988 and what a time it was. I remember the Genesis days like it was yesterday. Going to the Good Guys was best. They always had a few in stock right near closing time. $189. That was a deal! Ten bucks off the original...
