It was a very good film about living alone in the Alaska wilderness, but then the guy wasn't really alone as I thought he would be, he would get supplies flown in every four months, sohe really wasn't totally alone, he did excellent work building his own house/cabin with tools from the times, but it was a little disappointing, he'd set up his cameras and always show himself walking away, most shots were like this, I imagine he didn't know any better taking these films back in the late sixties, but it was rather boring and not worth the monies spent to own and see this film, I know I could of waited to see it on PBS, but I didn't want to wait and ended up buying the DVD second hand, at least I will be able to pass it to friends and family.
I would tell you it's worth seeing, but I would also tell you to wait and see it free, unless you get a great deal, then pick it up and enjoy!

  Mesmerizing

I honestly cannot put a finger on why...the video offers nothing really exciting...but is absolutely mesmerizing. It highlights a year spent by Richard Proenneke in the Alaskan wilderness. Proenneke brings with only a few supplies, and builds a cabin for himself with simple handtools. Proenneke documented many of the things he had done by filming himself in action. It's amazing what Proenneke can do with his wood chisels, axe, and etc. In some way, a chord in my soul was struck with this video. To live as simply as Proenneke would be fulfilling to the max.

I was so fascinated with the video, I also purchased his book that deals with the same topic. (One Man's Wilderness: An Alaskan Odyssey). The book tells the same story as the video, but includes much more detail. If you love the video, the book will steal your heart. As good as the video is, it cannot capture the detail in the same way the book does. I highly recommend both! Start with the video...to whet your appetite...then feast on the book. If you're like me, the story of Richard Proenneke will live inside you for the rest of your days!

I loved this video. I loved the book. Loved them, loved them, loved them!
