Movie Description
Michael Ritchie continues to attack his favorite theme--competitive rivalry--with AN ALMOST PERFECT AFFAIR. In the intelligently satirical romantic comedy, Keith Carradine stars as Hal Raymond, a young, idealistic American filmmaker who lands at the Cannes Film Festival with dreams of movie stardom. When he meets the gorgeous Maria Barone (Monica Vitti) and learns that she is the wife of the influential Italian producer Federico "Freddie" Barone (Raf Vallone), he begins to pursue her with a relentlessness that reeks more of business lust than personal love. All the while, the glitz and glamour of the world's most notorious film festival unfolds around Hal, where beautiful women and famous directors wander the city's streets in an awed, drunken stupor.

Shot in a pseudoverité style by cinematographer Henri Decae, Ritchie's movie was partially filmed at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival. This commitment to making the picture appear as documentary-like as possible, in addition to the sparklingly genuine performances from Carradine and Vitti, makes AN ALMOST PERFECT AFFAIR a compelling satire. There are also enough cameos and cinematic in-jokes to keep audiences entertained on yet another level.
