Underrated for Farley fans.

I've heard a lot complaining from other reviewers of this movie (on amazon, not ebay mind you) but I don't really see what all the fuss is about. Now if you're not a fan of Chris Farley (though personally I don't see how that's humanly possible) you probably won't be very tickled by this movie, and even if you are it still can't compete with Beverly Hills Ninja or Tommy Boy but it does easily trump Blacksheep which had precious few good moments.
Now the setting and plot of North American explorers is a nice choice with a lot of potential, which is used to some degree, but overall the writing just isn't that strong, I mean dumb humour can be one of my favourites but most of it found in this movie is just plain rubbish.
So if I think it's underrated why is this sounding negative? Why because I haven't mentioned the good parts; Farley snatching the eagle's eggs, Farley learning how to read, the gauntlet, Brokentwig who's not right in the head, and, my favourite, the drinking contest between Farley and the entire Spaniard warband, those looks on both their faces are simply priceless.
While most of the gold is expectedly mined by Farley there is some ok support work here too, Bidwell is probably the best minor character as he's almost impossible to dislike, but theres also Mathew Perry who does a decent job (his fever breaking always makes for a laugh but not too much else), Eugene Levy (though I actually find him overrated, in this case he's just a very annoying character with a very amusing voice), and whatever his name is that places the Spaniard Commander. He is in quite a lot of movies but this the only one I can remember that he actually tries to be funny so it's nice to see that he actually does a fine job of it.
So in closing I personally am very glad to have finally bought this one as its given quite a few fond memories from when I caught parts of it played on tv when I was younger (I'd almost always come in at the eagle egg part)and even if it's not quite funny enough to provide nonstop laughter, and very few can, it's still sure to bring a large amount of hearty chuckles over the years.
Farley will definitely be missed. It always makes me sad to think how he could have a lot more movies and mined a lot more gold if you will. I even read that he was scheduled to play Shrek before Mike Myers before he died. I don't know if it's actually true and Myers did an alright job of it but man I can only imagine what Farley could have brought to it.
