Synopsis
A funky, retro-cool essential for the vegan lifestyle, this cookbook contains a wealth of recipes and substitute ingredients completely free of meat or other animal products. It was written by two friends who became vegans and found it to be rather tough going. With humor and honesty, they share that experience with readers who may be considering a similar journey. For example, though the authors (who also co-authored the sequel, THE GARDEN OF VEGAN, HOW IT ALL VEGAN AGAIN) make heroic efforts to find an alternative for good cheese, they are quite honest about the reality that there really is none. Designed for vegan newcomers, this book takes pains to bring flavor, variety, and possibility to a diet many assume to be severely restricting. Meal suggestions cover everything from breakfast, to afternoon tea, to dinner and dessert. Other extras include suggestions on good substitutes for essential cooking items such as butter and milk. (For example, half a banana can replace one egg in many recipes). Also offered is a discussion on snacks for children and general hints for setting up house for those who aspire to be vegan homemakers extraordinaire. Recipes include Apple-Cinnamon Cornmeal Pancakes, Garlic Dill Cream Cheese, Faux Tuna Salad, and Maple Walnut Brownies. Body care recipes include Cucumber Lemon Mask, Peppermint-Clove Toothpaste, and Soothing Sunburn Lotion. With B&W photographs.

Publisher's Note
Sarah and Tanya are friends and self-described "lazy vegetarians" whose love of animals made them want to eliminate animal products completely from their diet. Their decision to "go vegan" was a challenge not only to their palate but to their way of thinking about food and nutrition. But with some imagination and a little know-how, the transition to a vegan lifestyle can be painless. And as Sarah and Tanya demonstrate in How It All Vegan, vegan food is fabulous food, full of flavour and all the nutrients you need.
