Album Notes Personnel: Lester Bowie (trumpet); Fontella Bass, David Peaston (vocals); Ari Brown (soprano & tenor saxophones); Art Matthews (piano); Fred Williams (bass); Phillip Wilson (drums). Recorded at Tonstudio Bauer, Ludwigsburg, Germany in June 1982. Includes liner notes by Peter Kemper. This two-disc set is a brave and remarkable work. The two discs have clearly delineated and contrasting identities. The first is given over to a set rich with soulful gospel-themed pieces. Fontella Bass is one of vocalists (she had a hit with the classic "Rescue Me" in the '60s and was married to Bowie for a time), and the core quintet is anchored by the sprightly and springy team of drummer Phillip Wilson, a longtime colleague of Bowie's, and bassist Fred Williams. Wilson's own "For Louie" opens the album, in a manner somewhat related to a New Orleans celebratory funeral march. They also cover Albert Ayler and Lee Leonard's "Let the Good Times Roll." The second disc is Bowie solo. As he did with the Art Ensemble Of Chicago, he mixes in other sounds--some horn-related, others not--with his trumpet. Bowie's sense of humor makes his more "outside" playing exceptionally friendly and inviting.
