ALL FLAGS FLYING
AMERICAN PATRIOTIC QUILTS
AS EXPRESSIONS OF LIBERTY
BY
ROBERT BISHOP & CARTER HOUCK
This book has beautiful full-color photographs of 110 patriotic and historic quilts. Each quilt has a detailed text description.
The first group of fifty-nine quilts, collected by Carter Houck and shown in the first section called "All Flags Flying", cover the period 1800-1985. The second group called "Expressions of Liberty" comprises the fifty-one winning quilts made for The Great American Quilt Contest, a Museum of American Folk Art even presented in celebration of the Statue of Liberty Centennial.
QUILTS ARE A UNIQUELY AMERICAN ART FORM WHICH CHRONICLE SIGNIFICANT EVENTS AND FAMILY TRADITIONS IN COLORFUL SWATCHES OF FABRIC AND NEEDLEWORK. With its theme of "Liberty, Freedom and the American Heritage" in honor of the Statue of Liberty Centennial, the Contest and Festival recognize the proud principles on which our nation was founded. The events also salute contemporary quiltmakers who carry on a proud American heritage.
