Review created: 05/06/09

true life exploits of english countryside vets pre and post WWII. Funny with some serious moments. This volume completes the series along with specials. Very good for the whole family to see.

All Creatures Great and small series 5

I used to watch the series on BBC and have also been an avid reader of the books for years before that, so when they started selling them on DVD I started buying them.Even though I really had a problem coming to terms with Lynda Bellingham as Helen, she did warm up a little toward the end of Series 4 and I have been able to accept her in the part. I can understand an actress(Carol) leaving a series but felt they really missed the mark with Lynda as a replacement, although she would be a fine actress in other, less familiar roles. The stories are so familiar and heartwarming that they carry the series without the original Helen and Mrs. Hall. This series continues on along with the stories in James Herriot's later books so it is basically just more of a good thing.I am anxiously awaiting being able to buy the last two series.
I did notice repeats of a number of stories, but with different characters, which really bothered me because I felt they thought we wouldn't notice. All in all, I am very pleased.

  Dry British humor abounds...
Review created: 03/20/08

Well produced and acted series. I rather enjoyed reading the James Herriot books years ago and rarely do movie or television series based on books do justice to the actual printed material. I was amazed with this production since it brought the characters to life as you follow rural vets through their daily lives starting in pre-war England right through to the early 1950's. There is much humor in the old farmers and their pets and livestock, but be warned: dry British humor abounds. Scenery of the English Dales is breath taking. I highly recommend this series to anyone, whether or not you have read the books, and you will really enjoy this series over and over again.
