South Carolinians and Artists themselves, Ann McAden and Boyd Saunders present a thorough and scholarly discussion of the work of Alfred Hutty, one of the most prolific and popular of the artists of the Charleston Renaissance. The book is well illustrated with reproductions of Hutty's work (both studies and final works) as well as photographs of similar subjects, as might have been seen by Hutty himself. The authors treat their subject with respect, but also with wit and verve, capturing the stylish form and accurate content of his works. It is a rare art book that is pleasant both to read and to look at. Such a book is this one. Anyone hoping to collect Hutty's works or seeking a fuller understanding of this important movement in American art would be well-served to buy this book.
Please see my other reviews and guides, some of which discuss other aspects of the Charleston Renaissance, some of which are purely for entertainment purposes.
Thanks,
