Alegría (2000, DVD)
This film is comprised of both dark shadows and bright joyous light. It is a celebration of love and life. The central plot is a classic love story between a melancholy street mime (played with grand pathos by the supremely gifted René Bazinet) and a glamorous circus singer, Julie Cox. The subplot deals with a Dickensian villain and unwanted children sold into slavery. The well honed performances by Cirque du Soleil entertainers add astonishing exhilaration to the proceedings and hauntingly arresting musical passages provide a spellbinding ambiance. The wondrous world of the circus is used as a metaphor for our lives on this harsh but beautiful plane of existence. I believe the producers of this lovely little motion picture would have benefited greatly by having named it "Life is a Circus" or given it some similar English title. It would then, most likely, have gotten far more attention and probably would have reached cult status.

My dad got me hooked on Cirque du Soliel. Now, I'm trying to buy them all. I can watch these shows over and over again. The music is great too. I have my 4 year old granddaughter interested. She can't get over how daring and flexible they are. She tries to bend that way herself. It's so adorable. I'm very pleased with my purchases. This Alegria is a must see!

Cirque Du Soleil has two albums that I absolutely love, this is one of them. Cirque Du Soleil's Alegria is upbeat and energetic, as well as one of the 7+ Cirque soundtracks that I own. Usually when I listen to the soundtrack and see the show it makes me love the album more, like Quidam, but this is not the case. Alegria almost has the same impact on me as Quidam does and I haven t seen it. The soundtrack to Alegria is upbeat and rhythmic, being another fine example of Cirque Du Soleil s shows and music. Alegria. I've listened to this title so often I'm surprised I haven't worn out the CD. A beautifully inspiring and healing music that embraces a range of human emotions. When down and out rest assured playing and singing along to this will ignite the fire to face the music as they say. Moving right along to Vai Vedrai with it's gentle persuasion and open cries creating a blue depth. Haunting, stormy at times, are we in a boat lost at sea, it's raining she's crying out to God ..and then we are back at the circus in the next tune. THIS is the album to take on that "if you could only have one album on a desert island..." fantasy trip! This remains one of my favourite albums of any time by any artist, and it is definitely my favourite of all the Cirque du Soleil shows --- and I've seen most of 'em now! The title song is absolutely infectious, with a haunting melody and lyric that belies the meaning of the title ("alegria" means "gladness" or "happiness" in Spanish). This delightful and unusual film was found browsing film titles on a popular internet auction site. I have never seen it advertised before, but I consider it my astounding luck to have found it! The film features a blend of international actors and the mesmerizing performance capabilities of the Cirque Du Soleil. It brings together breath-taking photography, heart moving performances, and the lyrical dance of the soul that only immersion in the Cirque Du Soleil can bring to us. Franco Dragone, who directs this film, is able to combine seemingly impossible elements to a moving and unforgetable.
