Had to read Alaska again before traveling there!Review created: 08/05/09

My husband and I each read Michener's Alaska many years ago. Somehow, it disappeared from our library. So when we decided to take an Alaskan cruise, my husband and I wanted to read it again. Our local bookstore had a more modern edition, but I didn't like the binding. I found the book used "but in excellent shape" on Ebay and bought it for a modest price. My husband should finish it next week. Then I'll get my chance, which likely means I'll still be reading it as we cruise by the glaciers, and visit Sitka, Ketchican, and Juneau, the history of which I remember is included in the book.

) Michener leads his readers on a tour of pertinent events, from the attachment of Alaska to the continent to the erection of the Alcan, through the eyes of both fictional and historical characters. Such characters - the first people to cross the land bridge, subsistence Aleuts, expansionists and gold seekers - capture the heart of the reader. Although the novel is almost dauntingly long, each storyline is rewarding and eye-opening.
