Refreshing, Inspiring, Enjoyable - A WONDERFUL MOVIE!!

This was a very enjoyable watch from beginning to end! A wonderful movie.. I think it is ABOUT TIME there is a movie such as this one on the sport of the Spelling Bee! HOOR-AY!! There have been spelling bees for many generations, it is good that the young kids today (and of future generations) will get to watch this movie and perhaps be motivated that much more. When I was a kid, the spelling bee wasn't even SHOWN on TV let alone a MOVIE about it. This movie is AWESOME!

I am so glad someone took the time to make this wonderful film, it couldn't have possibly been done any better. It is a family film, rated PG because there are a few bad words mentioned, but they are not too bad. The movie is refreshing, inspiring, enjoyable, and even a little funny! We loved the part where one of the contestants was stalling for time on stage (waiting for Akeelah, because if she wasn't back by the next round, she would be disqualified). He was so funny, "Can you use it in a SONG?" - Ha!

I wish there were more movies like this. It goes to show that you don't need to have huge special effects to produce a GREAT movie! This movie is perfect. And by the way, the girl who plays Akeelah (the main star) is WONDERFUL as are all the other characters, including the other spelling contestants. I especially loved her spelling coach and the drama between them. Fascinating.

The special features on the DVD such as the making of the movie, deleted scenes, inside the mind of Akeelah, and others are fun to watch too (after you watched the movie of course!) It gives you more insight into the movie, and how it came to be made. This movie was an excellent purchase and earns my highest recommendations!

The DVD was great, seller was great, overall great experience. The movie is about a young girl that overcomes adversity to rise to the top and show that people in bad situations are not always stuck there. I would highly recommend this motivation film for anyone.

  A Great Educational Movie

I enjoyed the movie Akeelah and the Bee because it was a very educational and inciteful movie. With so many distasteful movies available for our young people, it was good to see a movie that was based on academics. This movie was based on a young girl excelling in spelling and arising above her circumstances. Laurence Fishburne played an excellent coach and motivator. I wish that this movie could be shown at every school in the inner city regardless of ethnicity. The movie displayed that every child can arise and be successful, we just need to motivate and encourage our young people.

Akeelah is educational, edifying, and excellent

Akeelah and the Bee is about an 11-year-old African-American girl named Akeelah and how her experience in making it to the National Spelling Bee proved to be healing for her family, her coach, her community, and other contestants. Issues of race are handled clearly yet delicately. There is no sex or violence, and only mild street language. It is quite educational too as Akeelah learns concepts such as how important languages of origin are in forming English words. The movie contains several great messages on community, self-esteem, and that there are more important things in life than winning. At this point (age 40), this is my favorite movie of all time. I bought it rather than renting it so that I can share it with others.

  Fabulous!
Review created: 05/16/09

A terrific feel-good film about Akeelah (Keke Palmer), an adolescent girl in the city trying to escape the disadvantages of poverty, gangs, disrespectful teenage boys, and a single mother (Angela Bassett).

Whew, that sounds like a burden that would be impossible for most people to crawl out from under, but with the help of compassionate coach, Dr. Larabee (Laurence Fishburne), Akeelah dedicates herself to winning the National Spelling Bee, and trains ceaselessly to win.

Along the way, she discovers that commitment to a cause and high ideals can sometimes take a person farther than winning.

Akeelah and The Bee is a great story. Watch this film with your kids. You'll be glad you did!

Excellent Movie for all to see.
Review created: 04/10/09

This is a very good movie about a little girl who is very smart but needs a chance to show what she can do. I show how your surrounding can help or hender your learning. I was very mugh like her but never had the chance or encouragement to try or go futher in life. Enjoy this with your family and use it to encourage them, if you a kid with parents that don't encourage you or others who are trying to encourage a young one. Good movie for all to see.

A fabulous movie for all ages. Everyone should see this movie. I first was reluctant to watch this movie feeling it might be just a racial divide movie but I was terribly wrong. Great hope shown in this movie that reaches across all aisles. Should be required watching for school age children. Two thumbs up!!

I couldn't figure out why this movie didn't have a perfect rating when every review raved about the movie. Look at the reviewer "wtg708". That person is complaining about never receiving the product through eBay and is NOT rating the movie itself...unbelievable that some people can't follow directions!!!

  Akeelah and the Bee
Review created: 12/02/08

My son was a regional champion speller and finished fifth, third and third in three consecutive years in state spelling bees. He never studied and was too lazy to really work at being a winner. I bought the Sony could watch it as an example of what it takes to really be number one. I think he got the message. The story is well written. The acting is really very good overall and the young lady who plays Akeelah did a phenomenal job.

  Great Movie! :)
Review created: 08/19/08

This is a great movie! It's an inspirational story about a little girl and her talent for spelling, along with the things she has to overcome to suceed. The only thing I didn't like about the movie was the swearing. There was a fair amount of it in the movie. No F word though. all in all we love this movie. My kids are 9,7,5 and 2. They all love it(except for the 2 year old of course!) :)

Family Friendly Encouraging Real Life Educational Movie
Review created: 06/30/08
by:

I loved this movie. Aside from the fact that I enjoy teacher-motivating-student movies, I bought this for my 8 year old and I to watch since she is struggling with reading. It's hard to find family friendly movies these days without all the swearing in it..and this is one of those true gems that maintains the ability to be realistic and yet family friendly.

Basically, Akeelah is a smart girl, doesn't want to enter the spelling bee because she gets harassed because she's smart. She lives in a poor black city area and attends a poor black city school. The principal convinces her (to make up for some of her absences and lower grades)..and has a collegue friend tutor her because she shows extraoridnary potentional.

The story line is good for kids because it introduces kids to spelling bees - going from school level, regional, state and to Washington D.C. and does well to demonstrate the excitement that an "educational" activity can generate.

Other story lines include Akeelah's mother, a struggling single mother, who appears somewhat unreasonable to Akeelah, yet the movie puts the mother's challenges into perspective (for instance, Akeelah not telling her mother about the spelling bee, Her mother's struggle with handling a teen getting involved with the wrong crowd, etc.) It was really interesting how they handled this story line showing dual perspectives of weather someone is a "good" mother or "unreasonable" mother...

Another story line is with the tutor and Akeelah. He of course is very strict, only allows proper english in his house, timliness mandatory, etc. You later find out that he had a daughter that died (Akeelah's father died)..typical plot I guess...but nonetheless it fit in well with the storyline..some parts seemed not as well played as the rest of the movie, but doesn't deter from the movie's overall excellence.

Another story line is with Akeelah adapting to the rich beverly hills city kids. The movie deals gently with income and race prejudices. It also has a great turn in the end with two top "competitors" ending up to help each other out. Other topics it deals with is best friend jealously and family and community bonding.

This is a very educational movie which deals with many of lifes challenges from different angles. I thought the chacters were very well-developed. If anything, you'll learn a few new words! My daughter and I both enjoyed it.

I recommend this to anyone who appreciates a quality family movie, and I super-highly recommend it to homeschoolers. I even think English teachers would benefit from showing this movie in their class.

I brought this movie a few days ago and just love it. This is a great movie. What I love about it is the way the commnity steps up and help Akeelah with the words. And how she is willing to lose the bee to let a fellow kid win. I decide to buy it because this was such a great film. If you have not seen it, you need to it will have you in tears.

I loved the rapport developed between a little girl and a mentor who had lost his daughter when she was Akeelah's age. As the plot developed, the friendship between the professor and Akeelah grew deeper as she strove to learn how to compete in a spelling bee. Her determination was wonderful and her ability to form friendships with the most hardened street hoods, who helped her learn words, their origins and meanings, as much as any of her friends was delightful to see.

Wonderful wholesome entertainment, I could have done without some of the cursing from children when I am trying to teach a valuable listen to my daughter about education, and achieving your dreams, but other than that it upheld the intergrity in which it was intended.
