Publisher's Note
This story begins in 1926 when Northwest Airways was founded. The airline changed its name to Northwest Orient Airlines in 1934. This name was retained until the 1980s, when the "Orient" was dropped. During World War II, Northwest provided cargo and passenger services for the military from its base in Alaska. After the war, its route network expanded to cover most of the US, as well as transpacific and transatlantic routes. In 1986, the company absorbed Republic Airlines, and has since established Northwest Airlink to feed its major hubs. This handy guide presents the Northwest's history in words and pictures...a complete portable chronicle
