Album Notes
This teaser EP while we await the release of the second LP Nobody's Cool (already out in Europe) is masterful where the first LP was largely unrealized. The difference is the production of Jim Rondinelli, who brings out this New York band's power and a delicious bottom end without drowning them in the murk that characterized Kurt Ralske's work on the debut Full Isaac; plus Rondinelli also elicits a far superior performance from a quartet already noted as a solid live unit. The lead track is the one you want; long before you get to Tony Zajkowski's affecting little upper-range wail at the end of the bridge -- a dramatic moment -- Lotion have already punched your lights out with a gripping chorus, punctuated beautifully by a strident, chiming piano. This should be booming from every box in every club or on every radio station; it has "hit" written all over it. The other four tracks, including a gentle rendering of the oft-covered Left Banke '60s gem "Walk Away Renee" (hell, even the Four Tops made a hit single out of this, as early as 1967), are much lighter, chiming fare, but no less wonderful. Though that 20 minutes of silence at the end of this CD before a reprise comes in is rather sneaky. Don't miss the LP when it appears here. For the faux bossa nova "Rock Chick" and the scorching "Dear Sir" alone, it's superb. All the faults have been corrected at last, and Lotion prove that they really are the New York band for the ages we all thought they'd be when the first two Kokopop EPs appeared, and a nicely maturing one at that. ~ Jack Rabid
