The events are filtered through the eyes of protagonist Nicholas Hook, who, like the rest of the English army, has been dispatched to France with the vague assignment to kill Frenchmen. The King is Henry V, and he has claimed the throne of France by "divine right," thus playing God and sending thousands of men (and many women) to their gruesome demise.
