Album Notes
Recording information: Workbook Studio, Columbus OH.
After shuffling around the Columbus, OH, indie scene for several years, touring Japan a few times, and releasing a handful of records along the way, with their second proper album, Again Cast In, Tiara makes good on the musical promise held by their earlier works. The album-opener "It's a Message" is awash in epic soundscapes of twinkling, discordant, and melodic guitars coupled with vocals that sound more like Doug Martsch than Doug Martsch has, making it impossible not to draw comparisons between Tiara and Built to Spill. A bit derivative, but Tiara does it so well that it's hard to hold it against them. The Built to Spill-isms are thinned out a bit for the rest of the album, as Tiara tempers their sound with shades of Modest Mouse, Moviola, 764-Hero, Silver Scooter, and Yo la Tengo, the result being a sound more uniquely Tiara's own, but with influences proudly displayed like band stickers on a beat-up guitar. Though several of the songs have their fuzzy rock-out moments ("Lost" and "When There's Nothing" come to mind), for the most part Tiara lingers on restrained tempos and has an airy, at times almost jam-session feel. Most tracks hover around the four-minute mark, but they seem longer -- not a bad thing, necessarily, just a fact. Again Cast In marks Tiara's strongest effort; while the band retains and improves upon their trademark lush guitar arrangements, the record's biggest step forward is its superb production value and subsequently the fact that the vocals and gorgeous lyrics are for the first time clearly audible. ~ Karen E. Graves
