Synopsis
Photographers were banned from Ground Zero immediately after September 11, because it was a crime scene, and out of consideration for the families. Joel Meyerowitz somehow circumvented that ban, and the photos he took over a nine-month period comprise a photo-history of the rescue and recovery efforts at the Ground Zero site.

They record the awful wreckage, with its masses of twisted metal and dust, along with photos of the heroic individuals and groups who responded to the call--firemen, police, engineers, construction specialists, etc. They also record the small details that helped workers get by--an American flag, a banner with an encouraging message of hope, and doors with the word "Searched" in spray paint. Meyerowitz lives in New York City, and his work has been exhibited in many museums, including MOMA and the Whitney.

Industry Reviews
"Sensitive to both the visual drama of Ground Zero and its 'abiding sense of spirituality,' Meyerowitz has created an archive that is both a work of history and of art."
(09/01/2006)

"Looking through AFTERMATH, one sees...men and women--sometimes working alone, sometimes in clusters--bearing the nation's collective grief as they gradually restore order to chaos. Their grim task notwithstanding, the effect is uplifting."
(09/03/2006)

"[Meyerowitz's] book commemorates a powerful undertaking, when a grievous wound was cleaned with cranes, steam shovels and human hands."
(09/11/2006)

"[T]he fullest, most permanent, and most accessible account of the recovery efforts at Ground Zero following the 9/11 tragedy. Meyerowitz has applied his art beautifully to record this historical event for present and future generations."
(11/01/2006)
