Afro Samurai--season 1 is an awesome addition to any anime lovers blu-ray collection. Personally, I didn't get a chance to get into it when it was on Spike TV so I had already made it a point in my mind to get it, but the added bonus came when I learned it would be released on blu-ray (as there are still so few US distributed anime on blu-ray it best to take them where you can get them).
I have to say after watching it I was thoroughly impressed with the visual style and quality of animation. Of course, needless to say having the coolest cat in the world, Samuel L. Jackson, voicing Afro Samurai (as well as the character Ninja-Ninja) and a bangin' hip-hop soundtrack done by The Rza (from Wu-Tang Clan) sure as hell don't hurt either. Afro Samurai is not just some typical cliche search for redemption, let's just be real...it's all about the revengance of son over the murder of his father by a 'man' known only as Justice.
The journey Afro takes is painted in a pretty viscal way--meaning simply put...bloody, very bloody. And though the action is super slick and fast-paced, make no mistake this is not you little brother/sister's Naruto and is strictly for the 'grown' anime fans. It is important to stress that this is the Director's Cut edition which means there could be other things included that wasn't made to show on tv--so definitely no viewing around kids.
All that said if you're looking for a hard-hitting anime title to add to your blu-ray collection this is definitely one to get! I certainly can't wait for a season 2
