Cooper and Rathbone

Gary Cooper stars as Marco Polo in this light-hearted approach to the famed explorer with Basil Rathbone always making for a good villian! The story is done Hollywood style, with Marco arriving in China where he discovers pasta and explosives and, unfortunately, the love for Emperor Kublai Khan's daughter, played by Sigrid Gurie. If you look close you will see Lana Turner as one of her hand maidens. Anyway, Rathbone, Khan's devious assistant, also desires Gurie and her father's throne. The movie is pleasant but doesn't quite pan out to what we expect. Cooper is not quite the Italian type that we would normally see play Marco Polo, but then Cooper is a great actor and by the middle of the film we believe he really is from Italy!
