  Bruce Campbell at His Best
Review created: 10/07/06

It's noonish on Sunday and we're just finishing our pancake and sausage breakfast..er brunch and drinking the last of the coffee and our old friend Brisco County Jr. comes on the tv.

This series brings back great memories of lazy Sundays and tongue-in-cheek tv. No one but Bruce Campbell could pull off a Sci-Fi Western.

If you are looking for a little camp, a lot of laughs and really good stories with character you actually care about, give this a try.

It truly has an ensemble cast that combined with the excellent writing will suspend your disbelief one hour at a time.

And you get the entire series in this package not just 1 season!

Adventures of Brisco County Jr: The Complete Series (20
Review created: 07/12/06
5 of 9 people found this review helpful.

A science fiction-Western and comedy-drama with echoes of The Wild Wild West and Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.: The Complete Series is uniquely entertaining. Anchored by the comically heroic style of likable B-movie actor Bruce Campbell, Adventures lasted one television season in 1993-94. But it left behind a full 27 episodes (including two two-part stories) full of classic TV Western production values and a running storyline that resembles The X-Files after awhile.
Campbell plays Brisco County Jr., a bounty hunter and son of a legendary U.S. marshal (R. Lee Ermey) gunned down by the villainous John Bly (Billy Drago) and his band of misfits. The younger Brisco is hired by a consortium of businessmen to protect their interests from the likes of Bly, and while he's dedicated to that cause, Brisco is also determined to avenge his father's murder. Helping him do a little of both is a fussy attorney, Socrates Poole (Christian Clemenson); a rival bounty hunter, Lord Bowler (Julius Carry); a wacky inventor, Professor Wickwire (John Astin); and a sultry saloon singer, Dixie (Kelly Rutherford). Rockets, mysterious orbs, and superhuman strength are some of the delightfully out-of-their-element phenomena that find themselves alongside more conventional cowpoke ingredients, including a horse so smart he can chew the ropes binding Brisco's hands. For the most part, the stories stand alone. But as the season progresses, a lot of things get weirder, albeit in a good way: the truth about Bly and his connection to a golden orb everyone wants, for example, are certainly unexpected. But the show is always dazzling, often satiric ("Oy!" Dixie exclaims when Brisco outlines the steps involved in stopping a runaway wagon they're trapped within), yet heartening in an old-fashioned way. Special features include Campbell's reading of a chapter about the series in his autobiography.

  Excellent series!
Review created: 07/15/06(updated 07/15/06)

Brisco County is sort of an updated Wild, Wild West with lots of humor, interesting characters, and fun gadgets galore! It also has a lot of fun little puns and tributes (like a British spy named "Emma Steed" as a nod to another of my favorites, The Avengers!), and is genuinely fun to watch.

Bruce Campbell is excellent as the star of the show too - you can tell he had a great time making it. Unlike his later "Jack of All Trades", Brisco is not played just for laughs and is first and foremost an adventure story...just with a lot of quirky humor thrown in as well. It also has an interesting sci-fi element that definitely adds a twist.

My only complaint with the DVD set is there is only 1 episode commentary (though it's a good one on the first episode by Bruce Campbell). A separate disc of bonus materials makes up for it though with a lot of great behind the scenes info with the stars. The writers room is also a lot of fun to watch. I'll bet a blooper reel would have been hilarious though sadly isn't included.

One thing nice about this set is, although the final 2 part episode wasn't designed to be a series finale, it serves pretty well as one giving a bit of a feeling of a complete series, rather than one just ended too soon (though it definitely did!).

If you like Westerns or Bruce Campbell, definitely pick this one up!

  An Investive Series

Like so much episodic television, this inventive series that ran for a season on Fox was a taste that the general public did not aquire- but I did. Take the best of the old "Wild Wild West" and sprinkle in some genre busting, fourth wall breaking comedy and you have a smart, funny and (within the budget) thrilling series with great casting, solid scripts and a leading man who is a legend. Buy it and watch it with friends in your vacation cabin- that's what I am going to do this year. Laugh and wonder why the mass medium cannot support shows like this one.

New DVD Box Set - Amazing for Price!!!

The seller was quick to respond once auction ended and once payment was received, and even QUICKER to mail the item out. If that weren't enough, the item was BETTER quality than the other listings, even beating out the price from Amazon by more than $30! I was skeptical to be the first person to be sold to from him (as we all know how eBay goes at times), but I would highly recommend him and his business to ANYONE, as he his not only quick, but HONEST with his listings . . . OVERALL GREAT EBAYER AND AN EVEN BETTER BUSINESS EXPERIENCE!!!! ~Sincerely, Adam (bizznitchicuss@yahoo.com)

It's a funny witty western series with a sci-fi twist. It's a shame the producers only made 1 season. Bruce Campbell displays all his charm and is as funny as always in this sci-fi western sure to please all his fans.

I enjoyed romping with these characters and the imaginative way the present was put into the past. Sometimes the acting was a bit stilted but that only added to the wonderful silliness of the whole series.

I bought it as a birthday present.

  Brisco County Rules!

I was a huge fan of this show when it originally aired on Fox and never even dreamed it would become available on DVD. Although it's the ultimate family show, it trancends that genre to be wildly entertaining for anyone who appreciates a thinking wo/mans adventure comedy. Loads of puns. Much over the top humor. Superb stunts. Modeled after the western and scifi serials from the early days of cinema. Who can resist Comet the Wonder Horse? The DVD set is beautifully packaged and has terrific special features. This is a must have for Brisco County fans and a terrific addition to anyone's library who appreciates fresh originality on the small screen. BTW, it may be set in the old west, but it gleefully sets stereotypes on their ears.

Another good show murdered by FOX
Review created: 11/12/09

Here's a great example of why "Neilson ratings" are ineffective at being definitive.

This show had as many viewers as it could, at the time, in its time slot.

This show is an incredibly enjoyable romp through the wild west, with Bruce Campbell in the leading role.

Everyone remembers Bruce Campbell's performance in the "Evil Dead" series. I don't think this series is out of his comfort zone. Bruce seems just at home riding his horse, Comet, through town.

Here we have an appealing story, many homages present.

If you recall CBS' "Wild Wild West" in the 1960s, you could a lot nodding of that series from the 1990s.

Good clean fun for all those who like a little sci-fi in their westerns. One of my favorite shows from the early 90's. It's a shame Fox canceled it so early on.

Whenever I see the chin, I think "give me some sugar, baby". BCJr is a whimsical romp through the turn of the century west. The cast and characters are just plain fun, and make the Nostradamusesque plots leave you hanging on an edge.

Review created: 08/07/09
by:

If you like westerns, science fiction, "the coming thing" or just love Bruce Campbell this is the series for you! Taken away too quickly by Fox is this early 90's this fast pace well done show. Funny, action packed with some amazing guest stars, John Astin, Denise Crosby just to name a couple.

Wonderful show, everyone should own a copy.

  Brisco County Jr DVD
Review created: 06/08/09

I'd never heard of Brisco County Jr until I came across a clip of it quite by chance on Youtube. Strangely enough I'm not a fan of cowboy shows or sci-fi and this show promised a blend of both, but something about it grabbed my attention and I just wanted to see more. My daughter ordered the DVD for my birthday and as soon as it arrived I sat down to watch the first episode. It gets off to a slow start with the murder of Brisco County Sr and then you're interestd to a few of the regular characters including Brisco County Jr, Socrates Poole, and Lord Bowler. Brisco County Jr and Lord Bowler are rival bounty hunters and at first they absolutely hate each other. Lord Bowler things he'll run the new guy out of town but it's not long before he learns to respect his strong minded rival. Lord Bowler's actually my favourite character so far. Don't get me wrong, Brisco County Jr's great, and he gets some great scenes. Nevertheless it's Lord Bowler who gets my vote for the most interesting character in the show. When he's angry he's scary but he also shows his gentle side when he saves the female bar owner from certain death after arriving in a town populated only by ladies. The only character I don't like is the professor, played by John Astin. He's very similar to the Doc in Back to the Future, and I find that quite offputting. I must admit to laughing out loud when Brisco jumps on top of the professor's rocket and takes a quick ride down the railway track, it's just ridiculously funny. I've watched 2 CDS from the boxed set and have plenty more to look forward to. I'd definitely recommend this show for fans of the slightly bizarre. The cowboy characters have a Mel Brooks feel to them, and Brisco and Lord Bowler make a great team. I only hope Lord Bowler's role gets bigger as the show progresses.

  A WESTERN TREASURE
Review created: 05/03/09
by:

I enjoyed this series when it was originally broadcast on TV, so I was delighted to discover that I could order all of the episodes. This is a very unusual and campy western. It doesn't hurt that Bruce Campbell is an absolute babe! Kudos also to Comet, the intelligent horse, and to Julius Carry, the ornery but lovable Lord Bowler. Very nicely boxed and can't beat the price.
