Movie Description
Ringo Lam's straightforward action film THE ADVENTURERS begins its story of international drug and arms smuggling in Cambodia in 1975. A young boy, Yang, watches in horror as Ray Liu (Paul Chun), the head of a crime ring, murders both of his parents. When Yan (Andy Lau) grows up he becomes a pilot in the air force. After his attempt to kill Ray via an attack from his jet fighter fails, he adopts the name Mandy and goes to work for the CIA. He is assigned, conveniently enough, to put Liu out of business. But first, as part of the plan, he must go to San Francisco to kidnap Liu's daughter, Crystal (Ng Sin Lin). Through all this he is periodically aided by Mona (Rosamund Kwan), Liu's mistress who now wants more than anything to see Liu dead. After kidnapping Crystal and taking her to a remote cabin, Mandy is double-crossed and he and Crystal, naked under a black leather jacket (don't ask), escape after a wild gun battle. He discovers that she too hates her father, so they join forces and agree to split the ransom money from the kidnapping. But things don't go as planned, ending in a gigantic battle in the Cambodian jungle. With THE ADVENTURER, Lam shows a real flair for staging car chases, fights, and gun battles. It's not surprising that his next film was the big budget Hollywood production MAXIMUN RISK, with Jean-Claude Van Damme.
