Continuing on their path of mating vibrant dream-pop with raging guitars and explosive textures, Catherine Wheel tops itself again with a record that finds vocalist Rob Dickinson scraping his psyche raw. Unlike many other UK bands, Catherine Wheel doesn't neatly fit onto any bandwagon, opting instead to blaze their own path. Injecting more organ, acoustic guitar and swooshing effects into the mix, ADAM AND EVE effectively sculpts the band's sound into seamless, traditional songwriting structures. Personal relationships provide the fodder for this album, which explores the many facets of that subject. Lovemaking ("Delicious"), emotional turmoil ("Here Comes the Fat Controller"), and melancholia ("Ma Solituda") are chronicled with a depth that could only have come from personal experience.
There's a wide range of dynamics at work here. The gnarly mass of guitars in "For Dreaming" slowly wraps you in its deadly embrace, while the desperate "Goodbye" effectively tears apart your insides as Dickinson displays one of the finest falsettos going today. An emotionally tumultuous record that pushes all the right buttons.
